unexplained eye pain

Hi Dr...I have had unexplained eye pain for the last yr and a half.  It's at the back of the eye mostly but sometimes travels around to different sides of the eye and can cause some real weird sensations at the front of the eye too. I have been to numerous ophthalmologists, neurologists and dr's and they can't see anything wrong.  Had blood tests and an MRI done too and all was fine.  I have very bad light sensitivity and always have to wear sunglasses. Even on a dull day when outside...I am however sick of this uncomfortable pain and was wondering now about taking some pain relief medication such as a prescription painkiller since I have had this quite a while. But was wondering if there would be a particular one that I should ask for that would be best for the eyes (that’s if u are allowed advise of course).  I heard some medications can damage your eyes. in the long run. Or is there anything I should avoid?

Has anyone considered a diagnosis of occipital neuralgia?  This condition can cause some truly weird sensations around the eyes.  It can be treated by a steroid injection to the occipital nerve at the back of the neck.

You should NOT consider prescription pain medications for a mystery pain - just read the addiction forums on this site.  A trial of antiinflammatory medication, or anti-seizure medication, or some anti-depressant medications that also work for pain, should be attempted first.

But seriously look into the possibility of occipital neuralgia.
