vision blackouts

vision blackouts

I am a 28 year old female who for a while has had vision black outs.  I do get migraines that I am being treated for, but the blackouts tend to come and go with or without the migraine headaches.  When they occur, I usually am standing up or walking, a sense of dizziness and unbalance occurs, then my vision fades out for several seconds then fades back in. Do you have any advice or recommendation on what type of doctor I should see?  I have already been to an eye doctor who gave me a clearance for my eyes, and said the episodes were probably related to the migraines, but I tend to disagree.
dear carrie-
i am glad to try to assist.  this , as you might imagine, is a difficult area to diagnose. that being said, however, in an otherwise healthy 28 yr old female the likely cause is migrainous, or at least innoucuous in nature. still, the one thing I would probably recommend given a normal eye exam, is a visit with a neurologist.  if you were say 75 and had a history of high blood pressure, I may be concerned about a lack of adequate blood flow to the back of your brain ( occipital lobe ) where our vision is processed. but since you are not 75, i would find this highly unlikely- still a trip to a neurlogist to at least address the migraines may be in order. other, equaly unlikely, possible causes would include inflammatory conditions and rare blood vessel malformations- but I would bet on migraines. I hope this helps.
