visual field test

I was wondering what a "visual field" test is used for.
  What do the results determine?

dear jo-
a visual field test is used to determine the extent of one's peripheral, or field of, vision. this means it tests to make sure that you can see fully up down left and right, ie "side vision". it is most commonly used to diagnose or follow glaucoma, a leading cause of field of vision loss. But it also can be used to rule out vision loss caused by tumors, trauma, infection, inflammation, a very wide variety of causes.
i hope this helps.
