visual rings

I had one episode of about 15minutes of visual rings. Eyes closed there was a bright ring, eyes open i seemed to be looking through bil. cirlcles with blacked out peripheral areas. I had no other mental or physical symptoms and wondered, since I have not experienced these symptoms since, whether they should be checked out because they might be a precursor to something undesireable or might they just be something that occasionally can happen?
