vitreous detachment

I was diagnosed with a vitreous detachment in my left eye in Sept. 2010 and since then I have had three retinal tears all repaired with the laser. The vitreous pulling on my retina seems to be what caused the tears. My question is how long does it usually take for the vitreous to completely detach from the retina and lower my risk for additional tears and a possible retinal detachment. I am a 53 year otherwise healthy male. Thank you

Thank you for your response Dr. Vosoghi. My retina specialist recommended that I be seen every three months just to be on the safe side.

Usually months to a couple of years but each eye is different and I have seen new tears years after a PVD.  You need to have regular dilated exams by a retina specialist to be sure.  Every six months if there are no new symptoms should be safe (some would stretch it out to once a year at this point).  Sometimes based on the exam you can tell the PVD is complete (that you would have to ask your retina specialist).
