The OP might be referring to some of the internet claims out there that castor oil, plus prayer, lots of prayer, etc, can heal optic nerve damage.  In fact, naturalistic and herbal sites seem to tout castor oil for all kinds of eye problems, but the only halfway solid paper I've ever seen is one done in 2002 by Goto, regarding a small study indicating that a kind of treated castor oil might be useful for dry eye:

Generations of parents have considered it the laxative of choice.
I believe it was considered part of the seasonal tuneup for kids--everybody got a nice dose.
caster oil, cod liver oil, tincture of Merthiolate, Vic's Vapor Rub to the chest. Amazing that generation of children lived through it all.
And out on the prairie, as I understand it, gunpowder poured into eye infections!

Sometimes I wonder if these luscious items actually were manifestations of repressed hostility towards large, unwanted families.
There is a years worth of contemplation
