white film building up on the edge of the eye

Hello, and thanks in advance for looking at my question!

I'm going to be 20 in a month and I've been spending a lot of time in front of the computer since I was very young. I've never had problems with my eyesight until five years ago when I got my first glasses. But it would be, I think, three years ago that I started experiencing dry eyes and soreness, and more and more blood vessels in my eyes started becoming visible.

This most recent issue, the one I want to ask you about, has been going on for some time, but up to now I've discounted it as a fluke, something that will go away, but now I'm worried. I can see, in my eyes, these small thin pieces of some kind of white substance floating on the surface of my eyes. It looks to me, which is why I'm so worried, like it might be small bits of the sclera that have melted away because I abuse my eyes so much. I can see them in both eyes but only on the outside of my left eye can I see a layer of this white film that looks like it's made up of a lot of bits of this white substance building up over time. It's on the edge of the eye, the one farther from the nose, where the two lids meet. This buildup appears quite often. I think it's usually when my eyes are dried up from using the computer a lot but I'm not sure since I've not been paying it much mind up to now as I was hoping it was just some kind of a fluke.

I would be very grateful if you'd answer this question for me because I'm really scared.

Hi my daughter has a build up of film on the color parts of her eyes. It started in one eye. Just a small spot. I took her to a specialist she said it was cholestorol. So we changed her diet to all cooked food and cut down on portions for six months. Well during that time she developed a benine tumor underneath tje eyelid about the size of a dime. This new dr. Said cholesterol build up for the film as well. I think because i mention it. He then said he doesnt know what it is. After the surgery her eyes got worse and she has been sneezing mucos and blood for a year but no one knows why this film is on her eyes. But i think she has a infection. Someone please help.

Dear qwertz3822,

It is possible that this represents mucous buildup in your eye, an infection and oily debris, or a result of dryness and a change in the composition of your tear film.  I would recommend that you seek the care of an eyeMD to determine the cause and obtain treatment.

First, I don't think this is something to lose sleep over since I suspect you are just seeing normal changes that occur to the conjuctiva with dryness, and lots of wind and sun exposure.  You might live in a very sunny and or windy area.  Regardless, use artificial tears like Genteal or THera Tears every few hours and see an ophthalmologist for a complete exam.
