whole in retna

after cataract surgery, i was told i needed a vetrectomy due to something on my retna, after that surgery, i am now told i have a hole about 2mm in my retna. what could be causing all these problems

In general these types of problems (epiretinal membrane, retinal hole, macular hole) often have to do with the natural aging and degeneration of the vitreous gel.  When the gel degenerates it can collapse and pull away from the retina sometimes causing a retinal hole or detachement. The surface of the retina can also wrinkle or pucker because the gel is not there up against it to keep it smooth.  In the end, your problems are likely due the effects of aging on the vitreous and retina

some holes don't need treatment. Talk with your retinal surgeon before you proceed with any surgery. Cataract surgery increases the risk for retinal detachments.
