Aspartame ?

I am an 80 year old male in generally good health.  My only medications are Proscar and Eltroxin.  But lately I have developed low back pain and difficulty with  walking due (I think) to muscular pains in my legs.I also have developed a forward lean in my posture.  For many (approx 30) years my lunchtime drink has been a diet pop and my wife has suggested that Aspartame may be contributing to these difficulties.

There has been a lot of controversy about the safety of aspartame over the years, but generally, studies overwhelmingly show that it is safe.  There are other diagnoses that could be causing your issues- such as osteoporotic fractures (which could be causing your pain and your forward lean in posture).  As well, in your age group, it is important to always consider malignacy when there is new onset of back pain (don't panic though- just something to have considered).  Please talk to your doctor about any other symptoms, and get examined.  From there, you and your doctor can decide whether more investgation is necessary.  In the meantime, enjoy your diet pop;)
