Chronic Pain in 19yo, with other symptoms

Chronic Pain in 19yo, with other symptoms

I am a 19 year old in college.  Slightly over 2 years ago, I developed a dull, aching pain in my chest.  It is constant, and significant enough to require treatment from a Pain Management specialist.

However, it is not the only symptom

Since the beginning, I have had heart palpitations and shortness of breath problems.  My heart beats very heavily and I am out of breath like I've been running.  This comes on seemingly randomly.  However, it also happens every time I lay down, without fail

About 6 months ago, I started to develop pain in my legs.  They are a stabbing pain, that comes and goes in both legs, mainly in the calf and thigh

In addition, I am now significantly weakened.  It is legitimately difficult for me to go up one flight of stairs.  When I get to the top, I'm out of breath, and my legs are very sore.  In addition to this, my legs ache a lot.  I've also noticed similar weakness in my arms as well.  I have been told my walk is different than it used to be.  Apparently, I shuffle a little bit

I also experience frequent muscle twitching

I have seen a lot of doctors over the last couple years.  Cardiologists, Endocrinologists, GI doctors, Psychiatrists, all tests were normal, except the GI determined that my stomach digests food slower than normal.  All blood work and scans are normal

I thought we had an answer when I went a saw a neurologist.  After talking to me, he suspected that I have Mitochondrial Myopathy.  His EMG/NCV showed no nerve damage, but slight myopathy on the right calf & biceps.  However, a neuromuscular specialist repeated this test and said it was normal.  A muscle biopsy was done, which was described to me as inconclusive.  "Not normal, but not enough to diagnose"

After 2 years of this, I don't know what else to do besides continue with pain management.  Are there any conditions that stand out to you, or any type of doctor I haven't seen that might be able to help?

I am sorry to hear that at your age you have had to spend so much time, energy, and possibly money with health related issues.  There is no specific condition that stands out to me, and before I read that you had seen a neurologist, that is what I would have suggested due to the symptoms of weakness and muscle twitching.  Seeing as you have seen a cardiologist and had no diagnosis, it is possible that your other symptoms may be related to anxiety, although I'm assuming that this would have been addressed by the psychiatrist.

The only suggestion that I may give is that you ask about having the muscle biopsy repeated since it was inconclusive.  Maybe a repeat would give you a definitive answer, and would be worth a try since you have gone through all the other options.

I'm sure it's easier said than done, but try not to let this get you down- I'm sure it significantly impacts your life, and you still have a long life to live.  Anxiety and depression can also make your symptoms worse, so if these are issues, please talk to your doctor about treatment for these.

Best of luck.
