Lump on ankle

Lump on ankle

36 y.o. female. About a week ago I noticed a very sore spot on my ankle- front of leg about 2 inches above crease where the leg meets the foot.  The skin over the area is slightly red- lump is not big enough to be visible but you can tell where the spot is b/c of the redness.  When I feel around and press down there is a small lump that is moveable, soft, a little smaller than a pea and tender.  Definitely below the skin- perhaps in the fat layer.  When I press on the area around the bump it is somewhat tender too.   I do not recall any recent trauma to the area.  There is nothing that would suggest a bug bite either.  I have injured that ankle in the past- broke it about 16 years ago and then about 18 months ago, slipped on ice, bad sprain, ortho said possible small hairline fracture, aircast for several weeks. It is really sore and bothering me when I walk. What could it be?  My doc is on vacation right now.  I have an appt. on the 30th already scheduled for routine physical/flu shot.

A cyst can be considered - however, this is normally present during the fat layer.  Infection of the cyst can be considered if the area is red.

If the lesion is further down, you may want to inquire about imaging with an ultrasound for further evaluation.

A more definitive diagnosis can be obtained by removing the lesion surgically, or via biopsy.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
