Lymphadenopathy

I have been diagonsed with bilateral axillary lymphadenophathy.  Originally, I went to the doctor because I could tell my lymph nodes were swollen under my arms.  She gave my some antibiotics, took my blood, and scheduled me for a CT exam.  I took the antibiotics and they appeared to help a lot.  However, my lymph nodes did not go down all the way and are still large.  Prior to going to the doctor, I could feel activity in my lymphnodes.  After taking the antibiotics, all of that activity has been reduced significantly.  However, my doctor has recommended that I go to a breast cancer doctor to have a biopsy.  What are your thoughts?

Enlarged lymph nodes that persist are suspicious for cancer.  The CT scan is a reasonable initial approach.

In women, axillary lymphadenopathy can be suggestive of breast cancer.  Biopsy of the lymph nodes can be considered to ensure they are not malignant.

I would also obtain an ultrasound and/or mammogram of the breasts to ensure there is no evidence of breast cancer.

I would agree with your physician's suggestions at this point.  I would probably add some kind of imaging of the breasts as well.

This option can be discussed with your personal physician.
