Ovarian Cyst

My 13 yo daughter has had RLQ pain for 1 week, CT showed lg amount of fluid, therefore Pelvic US performed which showed possible leaking ovarian cyst with fluid along the tube and into the cul de sac. Should she have a surgical procedure to investigate or remove this cyst. Her Dr. wants to wait to see if it will shrink. She has no fever, and is not sexually active, cultures are negative. She still has pain though says 6-7/10. Can this affect her fertility if we wait?

Ovarian cysts are not uncommon in adolescence.  Typically most resolve in 1-2 months.  However, if they continue to grow or do not resolve, then a laparoscopy can be considered.  This surgery is also considered if the cyst is larger than 5-6 cm in size.

Monthly ultrasounds should be considered to document the resolution of the cysts.

The effect on fertility would depend on what kind of ovarian lesion is present.  There are many types of ovarian cysts which should not have an effect on fertility.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
