Ovarian cysts and the pill

Ovarian cysts and the pill

I am 31 years old.  it took me 4 years and a lot of repronix to concieve (conceive) my son.  I finally had a wonderful baby boy.  He is going to be 4 in sept. and since his birth have been on birth control pills and i tried the patch for about a year as well.  I had my annual exam in late march of this year and all was well.  Then lately i have expereienced some pain during intercousre.  I went to my OB and had a pelvic.  She said everything looks good uterus was fine and my left ovary felt fine.  My right one felt "Slightly full" she scheduled an U/S (aug 17th.) I asked her if she thought it was Ovarian Cancer and she said she doubted it highly due to age and pregnancy and that i have been on the pill.  But she does think it may be a cyst. I had a complete cbc, liver funtion test and creatine test and that came back fine.  did have some diarrea (diarrhea) for about 2 - 3 weeks but i took 1 immodium and it went away.  I do not have any abdominal bloating.  My tummy still the same size as it has always been, appetite is good. There is not history of Ovarian cancer in my family and the only history of breast cancer is my grandmothers sister on moms side and grandmothers sister on dads side.  So here are my questions..

Is it possible to develop a cyst while on birth control?

What does it mean to have a Full ovary?

And lastly if it is more then just a cyst.. what is the chance that it has spread to untreatable stage.?

I feel like a freak but i cant help keep thinking it may be something bad :-(

Thank you so very very much!

Lisa

To answer your question:
1) To my knowledge, it may be possible to develop an ovarian cyst while on oral contraceptives.

2) I'm not sure what your doctor felt, but a full ovary could mean a cyst or other mass in the adnexal (ovarian) area.

3) Difficult to say without knowing what was felt.  For further evaluation, I would consider a transvaginal ultrasound - which can evaluate for many of the more serious causes of ovarian masses (i.e. cancer etc.).

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Hi - It is definitely possible to get cysts while on birth control.  Some cysts may go up and down - or they may be bigger one month and on next exam be smaller.  I am not a Dr. but I have had this experience myself. Hope it makes you feel better that they might be nothing so try not to dwell on the negative until your Dr. determines.
