Test Result Significance

Test Result Significance

Hello.  I have previously posted on this site.  I am 35, and 15 weeks postpartum from my 4th pregnancy.  I developed PE during my pregnancy and was in the hospital for 5 weeks prior to delivery.  No history of PE in my subsequent 3 pregnancies.  My BP is now normal.  I had an echo that was normal because of continued lower-leg swelling.  My GP originally did blood testing for kidney and liver function in November (9 days postpartum) and it was normal.  My alkaline phosphatase was 130 then.  I had an additional function test for kidney and liver done in late Dec. and my alkaline phosphatase is now 160.  My GP says he wants to repeat this test and do a more extensive test to see where this is originating from in 4 weeks, but is not concerned that anything serious is going on.  I am obviously very concerned and don't like waiting, as I was told in Dec. my tesing was normal and only heard of this high number today.  Is 160 a high reading?  I took this test after eating and have read it should be done fasting, is this true?  My GP said I didn't have to fast prior, but I wonder if that is the reason for the higher number.  Please give me your opinion on my situation.

An alkaline phosphatase of 160 is mildly elevated.  Normally, elevation in this value can suggest liver/gallbladder disease, or bone disease.

A GGT can be done to determine the source of the elevation (it will be elevated in liver/gallbladder disease, but not in bone disease).

Further testing can include an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the liver and gallbladder, or a bone scan to evaluate for any bony pathology.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
