Thalassemia Minor and low platelets

I recently had my blood taken and now have an appt to see a hemotologist.  I have had thalassemia minor my whole life.  My Hemoglobin has always been low.  About 9.5.  However, on this last blood test my platelets are also low. (I think 141).  They were never low before.  Also in the manual screening it said large platelets were seen.  What does this mean?  Can all this be related to the Thalassemia minor?  I am just sick waiting for my appt. and wanted some insight as to what you feel this may be attributed to.  Thank you.

I agree with the hematology referral.

There are many causes for low platelets, including viral infections, B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, drugs, ITP, lupus etc.  

The blood count and peripheral smear would be the initial approach.  Depending on what is found, a bone marrow biopsy may be considered for a more conclusive diagnosis.  

The hematologist will run the appropriate tests to explain why the platelets are low.   Large platelets suggests a disorder where the platelets are being destroyed - but this should be discussed with your hematologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
