WBC Question

WBC Question

I have a question of minor concern.  Today I took a Physical for Life Insurance.  My nose was a little runny at the time.  However, the Tech mention if I have something "brewing" it could throw off my WBC.  Which may mean a bit of a hassle getting the policy.  So I decided to see my doctor today and he said my ear was a little red and pescribed Zithromax ( he didn't felt it was infected).  What are the chances that my WBC will either be below or above the normal range?

Thank you for visiting the Family Practice Forum.

If you have an infection of any kind you will quite possibly have an ELEVATED white blood cell count. If there is an infection anywhere in the body, the body will mount an "immune response" which will involve an increased number of "Leukocytes" or "White blood cells". Therefore, it is possible that if you have an upper respiratory infection your white blood cell count could be elevated.

If it is elevated, check it again when the infection has cleared and it should be back to normal.
