eosinophil

eosinophil

Dermatologist has been treating itchy back with two prescriptions for 5 weeks.  Onocologist had routine bloodwork done Wednesday that shows Eosinophil at 8.2 (1.0-4.0) and Eosinophil number 490 (120-300).  Melanoma surgery in January 2005.  Results were received on a week-end and I am very concerned to have had so much time go by treating back with ointments.  Does the itchy back indicate liver involvement?  Where do we go from here?  How concerned should I be about these elevations?  Thank you

General itchiness can be associated with liver disease such as primary biliary cirrhosis.

Causes of an elevated eosinophil count can be allergies, asthma, parasitic infection, blood disease, or cancer.

Further testing can be considered to narrow down the causes.  This can include various immunoglobulin testing to evaluate for allergies, and testing the stool for possible parasites.

If asthma is suspected, this can be tested for via a pulmonary function test.

These options can be discussed with your hematologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
