hgc levels/not doubling

My LMP was 1/11/04. After taking two home pregnancy tests, both of wich were negative (the last test two days after missing my period 2/10).  After one week of missed period I decided to call my doctor and (2/16) and a urine sample came out possitive.  I went to see my ob/gym on 2/20 who told me that something was wrong and I may loose the baby (he said he saw a 1 1/2 or 2 weeks pregancy.  He sent me to do hcg level test. On 2/20 my hcg levels were 678 and two days later were (2/22)the levels only went up to 789.

I am devasted because he told me I am lossing the baby.  I haven't had cramps neither bleeding. I feel ok, but desperated.

Could you explain why there is the possibility of loosing my baby and if the hcg levels should be of my concerns.

As you can see, there is a wide range of what normal is.  

To confirm the fetal status, you may want to consider a pelvic ultrasound for further evaluation.
