sore reddish patches on tongue

I keep getting recurrent sore reddish patches on the tip or sides of my tongue.These can be 1 cm. or more in diameter, feel rough to touch and can have a white edge to them. They can last for several days to a week and then fade away, but then others can  form.Could you please let me know what these might be and what may be causing them. Thank You.

There are many causes for oral lesions.  Common causes can include various types of infection.  Fungal infections like candidiasis, as well as viruses like Zoster, herpes, HIV or coxackie viruses are all possibilities.  Non-infectious causes include cancers (i.e. squamous cell cancers) as well as a variety of autoimmune disorders.

I would suggest a referral to an oral surgeon.  Various cultures for the aforementioned viruses and fungi as well as a possible biopsy can be considered as further diagnostic tests.  

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Not a Dr., though I play one on TV. Take a touchof relief in knowing that I would venture to say that the condition to which your speaking of is a BENIGN condition referred to as Geographic Tongue. It is a rare condition , I have it as well, abd its characteristics are exactly as you present with. I have read that in some cases if it becomes painful that mild steroids are administered to treat but this condition is recurring and in fact is reproted to worsen when emotional or physical stress is endured. I can atest to this as well.. Anyway I hope this makes you feel better. Do some seaches online for Geographic Tongue and I am confident you will see pictures of your tongue condition.
