The term cerebellar atropy is a descriptive one.  The cerebellum is the part of the brain at the base of the brain, and is responsible for balance and coordination,  The term atrophy refers to shrinkage.  Causes of cerebellar atrophy range from genetic to infectious to toxins (especially chronic alcoholism).
