Bleeding during sex

by galaxy35, Mar 20, 2002 12:00AM
Over the past year I have had a reoccuring problem with bleeding during sex. I have seen my gynecologist for this problem.  At first I was treated for a bacteria infection.  I have also had many pap smears and an ultrasound on my vagina, all came out negative.  My doctor says that there is nothing wrong, that this is just a fluke and it will go way with time, but it hasn't.  I have had tests for every STD and they are all negative but this still seems to occur.  I did not have sex for months with my boyfriend that I have been with since this started happening, because I am afraid of it happening again.  One time when I went in for an exam and my cervix starting bleeding after being poked.  Then the most recent time, it didn't.  So I was told and assumed everything was fine.  Last night I had sex for the first time in months and I still bled.  And it's not just a little bit of blood, it's enough to soil the sheets.  There is no pain involved with the sex, the only way I notice that it is happening is from it being so wet.  There is not a problem with rough sex or lubrication. I am also on the pill (mircette), but this was occuring before I started taking the pill.
This is a huge problem because I am afraid to have sex now even though my doctor tells me I'm fine and should continue to have sex.  I don't know what to do but I want this to stop. I want to enjoy sex again. Please help!

Thank you for visiting the Family Practice Forum.

I suspect you have what is known as a "Friable Cervix". This essentially means that your cervix is very prone to bleeding.
It sound like you have had an extensive workup for this problem and there is no infection present that would be causing this. Bleeding from a friable cervix is typically due to chlamydia, other infections or cervical cancer.

Two things come to mind. Firstly, are we SURE that all of the tests for infection are negative and that the pap smear was in fact negative? I might be inclined to repeat these tests just to be on the safe side.

Secondly, have you considered getting a second opinion from another gynecologist? I had a case similiar to what you describe during my training (residency). As a last resort, the gynecolgist did something called "cryotherapy" (freezing) of the cervix. The patient did have some significant discharge after the cryotherapy, but the cervical bleeding ultimately stopped. This procedure is not without risks, the most important being that scarring of the cervix which occurs which may effect the ability to get pregnant in the future.

You present a difficult problem here. In my experience, when problems like this arise and you are not finding "solutions" with one specialist, it is time to try a second opinion.

Hi Galaxy,

I'm curious:  have your doctors looked into the possibility of some sort of bleeding disorder?  This may explain why other tests showed no vaginal problems.

Okay, I'll zip up my mouth until the doctor responds...  ;o)

Good luck, though.

Searching ... once again makes a very good point here. A blood test called a ProThrombin Time (and a Partial Thromboplastin Time (also called PT/PTT) is something to consider as well as a test to rule out hypothyroidism. If these are normal, we can rule out a bleeding problem or thyroid problem as a possible cause.

by galaxy35, Mar 21, 2002 12:00AM
I have been tested about 5-7 times within a year for chylmadia and gonorrohea.  I have also been tested for HIV and syphilis, all were negative.  The only thing I haven't been tested for is herpes.  I have also had around 3-4 pap smears with the year and all were negative, with the exception of the time when I had a bacteria infection.  I did have some blood tests done when this first started, but I am not sure if I was tested for a blood or thyroid disorder.
I am going to another gynecologist next month.  Hopefully she will be able to figure out what the problem is.
Thank you both so much for your responses, I appreciate it.

Galaxy,

Good luck.  I'd be real curious to hear an update, if you ever do find out the cause of your bleeding.

Dr. T, glad you caught me "being smart."  ;o)

See i am a girl and participated sexual intercourse with my boy friend.....
But to avoid the pregnancy,my boy friend removed the pennis from my **** while ejaculation and avoided the sperms to enter in..

I want to know ,
1. When actually pregnancy starts?
2. How to know that pregnancy started?
3. To avoid pregnancy what i have to do?
4. Would the pregnancy comes even the sperms are not dropped in
   to the ****?
5.what is the link between the pregnancy and blooding, which happens normally once in 25 days.

Please clarify doubts regarding this..and send me the detailed information regarding this.

I am having a simular challenge. I recently got married. I have not had sex for over 7 yrs. I began experiencing bleeding during sex a few months prior to me not having sex for 7 yrs.  Now that I recently got married and sexually active, it is happening again. I had a pap and it came back clear. I have had two exams by two different doctors...and both had different ideas of what was going on. This latest doctor suggested I have a DNC? But no clue what is going on. The other thought it was a result of not having sex and my virgina being so small.
Like you, my husband is very gentle. NO ROUGH SEX.
Many years ago my doctor called me in for Clymedia, but once I got their they realized they had someone elses results and not mine. They tested me again and all was well.

It stops right after the sex. It does not bleed the next day.

I am having the same problem regarding this bleeding.  As of right now, my doctor has taken me off of my birth control pills.  I have to wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I am on low estrogen pills (Yasmin).  I have only been off of them for a week, and the bleeding still continues.  I truly want to find out what the problem is, but don't know who I should go see.  My family practioner sent me to a gynecologist, and all of her tests come back normal.  Where do I go from here??

by galaxy35, May 31, 2002 12:00AM
I went to the gynecologist and she suggested that maybe it was a bacteria infection, even though nothing was being detected.  She put me on doxycycline for 10 days.  I hoped this would cure the problem....but it hasn't.  I am not sure what is going on, but this is not normal!
Honestly, I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one this is happening to so if you find out any information, PLEASE SHARE!  I want this to stop.

Galaxy,

I COMPLETELY understand what you are going through, and like you, I am glad to know that someone must be feeling the same frustration and cry the same tears that I cry.  Although the bleeding is frustrating, none of us have discussed how this is affecting our mental state and our sex lives.  This is not something that is one issue and one issue only.  It affects so many areas of our life, and I think that is where most of the frustration comes from.

Have you mentioned the "friable cervix" to your doctor??  What was the outcome??

by galaxy35, Jun 12, 2002 12:00AM
Just an update..
Well, I called my gynecologist to let her know that the bleeding continues.  She recommended to have a cervical bioposy done.  So now the saga continues.  I have a feeling that it is going to come up 'normal' as well.
I do agree that this is not just a physical problem, but it affects your relationship and mental state as well.  It's a huge load to carry around, also knowing you can not do anything about it!  I am so very lucky that my boyfriend is as open-minded and patient as he is.
If anyone has any advice or comments, please share.

I just had the same problem. It has never happened before. I bleed in the middle of sex and soon as we stopped i wasn't bleeding anymore. I thought it was my period so of course I put a tampon in and went to check it and clean as can be. Although I am due to start my period soon. My back is tight. I have no other pains I feel pretty normal. It now is starting to bug me . Thanks ....

I don't know much about this problem, but can tell you what just happened a month ago when my daughter age 33 yrs old, called me in the middle of the night, saying she was about to bleed to death. When I got her to the hospital,
She had lost an extreme amount of blood through the vagina. Before she got to me she had been passed out about two hours, bleeding. They said that if she hadn't got there when she did she could of bleed to death.

They weren't sure but had thought that they were going to have to do emergency surgery, and even a blood transfussion. But when they called in a Specialist, he didn't have to do all of that. He found out that her VAGINAL WALL had torn, during SEX, but it was not actually due to having SEX and it was due to some HARMONIAL problem.

She had not been taking her HARMONE pills and caused this. Now who would imagine something like this. I sure never would. When she seen her Gynocoligist (hope spelled right) she said it was due to a TEAR IN THE VAGINA WALL and due to not taking HARMONES....
She is still in an extreme amount of danger and THREAT to her LIFE, because if this TARES AGAIN, she could BLEED TO DEATH. The VAGINAL WALL is so VERY THIN.

She had been LOOSING WEIGHT about 35 lbs quickly and prior to this had ENDEMETRIOSIS.......Now the doctor has run some tests and my Daughter is not wanting to tell me just what they are, until she finds out if Negative or Positive. I am worried to death, but all she says, it isn't good at all. I dont understand her reason for this, but I know she is a very sick gal. She is sleeping alot, very weak now and was so strong and active. I am really afraid I am going to loose her. This was such a Freak thing to of happened.

When she was in the surgery at the hospital, which they let me stay in there, the entire time (Strange they did) at one point she turn COLD and just felt like she was DEAD. I about lost  then. I could tell the doctors were worred too the way they were monitoring her. Anyway you would think a HARMONE PILL wouldn't of done what this done to my daughter. Now her life is threaten still and waiting for these tests to come back.

I know it doesn't help you much, not knowing what these tests were or the results, just like me, but it may help you to know, how VERY SERIOUS your bleeding when having SEX can be and not actually caused from the SEX ITSELF.

She is real secretive, especially to me, because I am very ill myself and trys not to worry me, but she has said they give her VAGIFEM (some form of shot) treatments to give herself (I take it Vaginal insertion)  and then is on a VERY HIGH DOSE of HARMONES and besides
that I don't know what else.

If and when I find out more I would love to tell you. She should be getting the tests back in about 8 more days and this is July 20, 2002. You are welcome to email me ***@**** and I wish you all the luck and hope some part will help you or some other person, with this unamed BLEEDING Disorder.

I very recently cheated on my husband.  The partner I chose is very accomodating but does get rather rough.  I too bled during sex for the first time with him and am very concerned about it.  I'm ashamed to go to my doctor and am hoping it is just from the rough penetration with a "sex toy".  He and I have both agreed that we let things get carried away and that we'll not let it happen again.....but still, I feel very concerned that it happened at all.  I'm now apprehensive about having sex with anyone.  I only bled enough to soil the sheets and then the spotting was gone by the next morning.  If anyone else has had this problem I'd appreciate you sharing with me your outcome.

I have the same problem with the bleeding during sex, and it just occured to me that it could be due to fibroids.  Fibroids are growths in the uterus that can cause abnormal bleeding, and are usually easy to treat.  My mom had a few and had abnormal bleeding all the time.  Check it out.  All your doc has to do is go into the uterus with a telescope, its pretty painless.

Have you had a pap smear done lately? I am going to the Dr. on Wed. I am also bleeding during sex. But as soon as we are done it stops. My periods have become very heavy. I have no other symptoms. If you are having a foul odor, I would get in ASAP.
