Hello. I am 36 yo and recently began to seek care for sudden onset of rapidRapid shallow breathing hair loss, all over the scalp. Hx of Spondylitis secondary to IBD, CerebellarAcute cerebellar ataxiaAtaxiaAcute cerebellar ataxia, and Pulmonary Emboli. I had been on Topomax (topamaxTopamax Topamax sprinkle) for 8 months prior to the onset of alopecia. I discontinued that Aug 24, fearful that it could be the cause. My PCP found my DHEA to be almost 800, which he said was more than doubleDouble-tussin dmnormalNormal saline flush levels. I saw an Endocrinologist next, who did a DHEA-S test instead. This was within normal range. He feels that this rules out Endocrinology related issues (corticoadrenal tumor etc) . A dermatoligist felt that Topomax (topamax) could be the cause. I saw my rheumotologist. He confirmed that I have no symptoms of Lupus, and that Spondylitis would not cause alopecia. My hair falls out in fistfulls daily, and thick hair has always been a trait of mine. No history of prior hair loss. Also to note, all thyroid labs were normal, and testosterone levels were normal. I am unsure of what the next move should be.
Read QuisieSue, sky74 and Anneeee remarks about their experiences with Topomax (topamax). They experienced hair loss too after taking this medication. I think I saw their comments in the Weight Loss forum.
