DHEA versus DHEA-S

by Lynnann36, Sep 25, 2009 03:13PM
Hello.  I am 36 yo and recently began to seek care for sudden onset of rapid hair loss, all over the scalp.  Hx of Spondylitis secondary to IBD, Cerebellar Ataxia, and Pulmonary Emboli.  I had been on Topomax (topamax) for 8 months prior to the onset of alopecia. I discontinued that Aug 24, fearful that it could be the cause.  My PCP found my DHEA to be almost 800, which he said was more than double normal levels. I saw an Endocrinologist next, who did a DHEA-S test instead. This was within normal range.  He feels that this rules out Endocrinology related issues (corticoadrenal tumor etc) .  A dermatoligist felt that Topomax (topamax) could be the cause.  I saw my rheumotologist.  He confirmed that I have no symptoms of Lupus, and that Spondylitis would not cause alopecia.  My hair falls out in fistfulls daily, and thick hair has always been a trait of mine.  No history of prior hair loss.  Also to note, all thyroid labs were normal, and testosterone levels were normal.  I am unsure of what the next move should be.

Read QuisieSue, sky74 and Anneeee remarks about their experiences with Topomax (topamax).  They experienced hair loss too after taking this medication.  I think I saw their comments in the Weight Loss forum.
