Is my antibiotic causing my late period?

by raallen, Jul 12, 2009 01:13PM
For three years straight I have been with the same partner and we haven't used any form of contraceptive the whole time, and I haven't gotten pregnant. Not that I am trying to, but I am assuming that something is wrong on his part because both his parents had serious reproductive problems of their own.  It just so happens however that my period is two weeks late.  The latest I've ever been is one week.  It would be easy to just run out and buy a pregnancy test, but I am wondering if there is another reason I am so late.  I recently had an infection and took the antibiotic Bactrim for the first time ever.  I became extremely constipated while I was on it. I have never been so constipated in my life!  I honestly thought I was going to have to go to the ER for it!  I am pretty sure the Bactrim caused me to be so constipated because as soon as I quit taking it I started having normal bowl movements.  Could my very late period also be a side effect of the Bactrim???????

It could be due to the antibiotic, but, I actually doub it. I think I would buy a pregnancy test to make sure, just because his parents had reproductive problems does not mean he will. You never know what God has in store for you.

Please keep us posted.

Today I bought a pregnancy test for a dollar.  (I know it sounds ridiculous but they like to be complicated at dollar general so.....) anyway, it said the result would come back in one to three minutes, but it came back in about 3 seconds (no exaggeration)....And it was positive.  Which leads me to a whole new bout of questions.  Could it be inaccurate because it's a cheap test?  Could the antibiotic mess with the results?  Either way I am going to go to a different store in the days to come to buy a more expensive test.  You are so right, too about not knowing what God has in store for me.  I know that no matter what happens He will take care of me.  Thank you for being an outspoken Christian.  I love hearing that there are other people out there who share my faith.  It is very encouraging.

Wow, that was a fast result. You know, it could be accurate, I just do not know about things like that, I have never been blessed with children. I would get another test and see what happens. I really don't think the antibiotic could cause the false readings, really is hard to say, some have so many side effects. If you are still concerned you could ask the pharmacist, he would surely know about the antibiotic AND the test results being positive due to it being an inexpensive test.

Yes, I am a staunch Christian and the Lord is the center of my life. You are so right, whatever happens, remember, HE is in control and you have nothing to fear.

Please keep me posted.

Well, I am pretty sure I am pregnant.  I took another test today and it immediately read positive.  What are the chances of two false positives?  I know it is low for even one.  I have another test that I'm going to take in the morning, but I'm sure I know what it will say.

I would say that "congratulations" are in order. If the next one says the same, which it no doubt will, I would set up an appointment with a gyn and see what he/she says and start what-ever procedures are needed to assure a healthy pregnancy. :)..

Keep me posted.

Well, like expected, I took the other test this morning (since I heard they are best when taken first thing in the morning) and it immediately read positive.  I hardly slept last night though because of the anxiety of it all.  Though I wasn't on birth control, I wasn't planning to get pregnant, so this is all sort of a life altering shock. Though I know the Lord will take care of me it still makes me anxious.  I know I'm not nearly as anxious as I would be though if I didn't have Him in my life.  I can't wait for tomorrow because I will go to the doctor and get a confirming test.  Not that there is any doubt anymore.  Since I'm pregnant I can get medicaid though, so that is good.  I've been going to a free care clinic and not getting good care there.  For one thing, every time they come in to see me they ask about my medical history. I have an extensive medical history at that clinic! I was in the ICU there for five weeks! How am I supposed to know all that and repeat it to you every time I go when you are the one with the file that tells all about it?! It's ridiculous.  I have a love/hate relationship with that place.  On the one hand they helped save my life, but on the other hand, they are so unorganized and stupid.  I guess that beggars can't be choosers, but I just think that whether a person is paying or not, the healthcare professional should give them the best care they possibly can.  They could at least review the chart!
