Left side of the chest hurts

by Ceolmhar, Oct 31, 2007 07:45PM
The left side of my chest hurts, mostly when I breathe deeply, but it also hurts a little bit all the time. My neck hurts/is really tense and so does the top of my shoulder. I know some of it is anxiety because of my chest hurting. Is this something I should go to an emergency room, or can I wait to see my doctor?

I cannot comment on specific treatment without evaluation.  However, if there is any concern, I would recommended seeing emergency medical care.

Heart and lung issues should be considered.  I would consider a chest x-ray and possible CT imaging of the chest if lung pathology is suspected.  The heart can be evaluated with an echocardiogram.  If your physician suspects coronary disease or angina, a stress test can be discussed.

Musculoskeletal causes and anxiety can also lead to this picture, but should be considered if the lung and heart evaluation is non-revealing.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
