Leg Swelling

by ValleyGirl618, Mar 27, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 37 year female in good overall health. About ten years ago I injured the achilles tendon on one of my legs while working out at the gym. Iwas walking very fast on the treadmil and I felt something like a "pop" and then something pulling apart in my calf. That ankle was very tender and swollen and I couldn't bend it at all. I was saw a doctor who prescribed anti-infammatory medications and told me to elevate my leg. Eventually, the pain and swelling went away, but that leg has never been the same.

The left calf (where I injured the tendon) is always just a little bit bigger than the calf of the other leg. That leg also gets tired and sore more quickly when I sit, or walk for long periods of time. It also seems to swell a little after I exercise. Any idea why this could be? It's been so long since that injury.

Scar tissue form the injury can lead to chronic swelling leading to the symptoms you describe.

You can image the area to ensure there isn't any new damage.  This can be done via an MRI.

Another consideration would be a blood clot, which can certainly lead to swelling and pain.  This can be ruled out with an ultrasound.

Otherwise, a referral to an orthopedist or physiatrist (rehabilitation MD) can be considered for further evaluation.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
