Mass in upper thigh at buttocks

by janis54, Dec 01, 2008 06:21AM
I am a 54 year old female. About a week ago I discovered a mass on the back of my upper thigh in the area where it joins my buttocks, just off center towards the outside. I became aware of it when I sat on a hard surface such as a wooden chair or toilet seat as it hurt under pressure. It feels hard, horizontally elongated and egg shaped and about the size of my thumb from the knuckle up. Also. as I push on it, it pops over to the other side of my finger.

1) What kind of doctor should I contact?  A surgeon?
2) Please describe the muscles in that area?
3) What is that area called?
4) How long should I wait to see if it changes or subsides?
5) Is shape important and why?
6) How do I determine if it is in the muscle?

This discussion is related to Question about soft lump on the upper thigh?.
