Problems AFTER Miscarriage

by purpleposie, Apr 07, 2008 01:34PM
I had a miscarriage this past November at 11 wks.  (my third pregnancy and second miscarriage) The fetus died at approx 5 wks but because the dr had me on progesterone I didn't expel until they discovered the baby had no heartbeat at 9 weeks and told me to stop taking  the progesterone.  I opted to try the natural way versus the D/C.  When the miscarrige did occur it was occumpanied by horrible cramps and massive bleeding that sent me to the E.R. for help.  Morphine didn't touch the pain.  These cramps were far worse than contractions from the birth of my son!
The E.R. Dr. helped the largest of the tissue out with clamps.  The OB I was seeing for the pregnancy tested my beta levels until the middle of December.  A d/c was scheduled and canceled because the levels were going down.  I was still feeling very poorly and just not right in January so I returned to my regular ob/gyn for a follow up.  She discovered I was "eat up" with a bacterial infection and said I may still have to have a D/C because I had been having severe cramps during ovulation and during my period similar to the miscarriage.  (I've never had cramps of any kind during periods before this miscarriage).  She sent me for a vaginal ultra sound that reveiled all the tissue was gone however I did have a cyst on my ovary.  She helped clear up  the infection with antibiotics and told me to keep taking my prenatals and folic acid and we could try again to get pregnant in two months, the cyst wasn't anything to worry about.

My Question is....I'm still having ovulation cramps every month and that is something I never had before this miscarriage and my periods are off, the cycles are 24 days to 29 days.  I had no trouble after the birth of my son, I breastfed for 9 months and when I stopped my periods just picked right back up at a 28 day cycle and I had no issues or cramps.  Could the cyst be causing this pain and variation?  Or could there be something else going on?  Could the miscarriage have caused some kind of damage the ultrasound didn't show?  We would like to try to conceive again but I'm worried about another miscarriage.  Should I go ahead and go to a high risk ob/gyn or are these things normal and nothing to worry about?

Thanks in advance!

First of all....my heart goes out to you.  I myself have had 3 miscarriages and only one successful pregnancy.  My daughter is 9 months old!  With my first miscarriage I opted to miscarry naturally and I experienced everything you experienced above.  Painful periods, etc.  I also have a history with ovarian cysts...so I do know that the pain you described above could in fact be related with the cysts.

I opted for D&C's during my 2nd and 3rd miscarriages and I had much less of a hard time.  Granted....it was painful...but not nearly as bad as miscarrying naturally!

During my 4th pregnancy (which resulted in a beautiful little girl) I too was put on progesterone.  I also opted to see an OB/GYN who specialized in high-risk pregnancies.  It was the only time I had a successful pregnancy.

I can't really give you any suggestions.  I do recommend that you consider seeing a high risk ob/gyn.  From experience....they are wonderful!

I hope you have great success....if you need any information on high rish pregnancies let me know.  I was on bedrest the ENTIRE time...went in to labor 6 weeks early....etc....I have alot of information/insight.  :)
