DVTs typically come about in people who have had a period of inactivity, surgery or illness. However, like anything else, there are exceptions to this rule. There are other possibilities of course, such as a pulled muscle, bruise or even a fatty tumor (lipoma). While he really doesn't fit the "classic" picture of what one sees with a DVT, it is a possibility. If you want my opinion, the safe way is the best way to go here. Tell your husband that while a DVT is not "likely", it is something that needs to be ruled out with an ultrasound. Cancer is extraordinarily unlikely. For one, cancerous tumors such as this would not just "show up" overnight. Muscle strain and/or a bruise (which is just a collection of blood under the skin following injury to a small vessel) is the most likely diagnosis here.
Have this looked at by his doctor.
