Sciatica and pain in buttock area

by aprilac, Aug 05, 2006 12:00AM
my recent back x-rays showed arthritis and i do have all the symtoms of sciatica; discomfort and pain in the buttock area when sitting and very low back stiffness. i have been in pt for about 6 weeks and i do notice an improvement, but i still have alot of discomfort when sitting. it feels like the bone in my buttock is constantly sore. i am started a new job soon and i am worried since it is alot of sitting time. i have been doing stretches, but are there any other things i can do to relieve the pain when sitting ? i do not want to tell my prospective employer and i am hesitant to bring a back support cushion in for my back ? any insight would be grateful.  thank you.

6 weeks of PT is an appropriate conservative approach to sciatica.  If the symptoms continue, an MRI of the back can be considered to rule out a herniated disk.

Most cases of herniated disks resolve with conservative therapy.  If the symptoms continue, a referral to an orthopedic surgeon can be considered.

This option can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
