Strep Throat without Antibiotics

by lambkins, Mar 24, 2009 02:44PM
Hello.
About 10 days ago, I started feeling slightly unwell, and within 24 hours started a fairly painful sore throat.  My temperature remained under 100 F, but I was taking Tylenol and/or Advil.  I was achy and miserable.  I had a rapid strep on day 3 of my illness, which came back positive, but could not get to the pharmacy until the following day.  By that next day, my sore throat was gone, with bit of scratchiness left behind. and I was feeling 75% better.  Because I typically react poorly to antibiotics, I chose not to take them, given my improved state.  After looking around a bit on the internet, I now know that there is much debate about the need for antibiotics for strep, with some saying to always err on the side of caution to avoid rheumatic fever, in particular.  However, at age 38, with no history of ARF, I don't know how likely that scenario really is?

Have I made a huge mistake?  And at what point would it be wise to get a second test to be sure that I no longer have an active infection in my throat?
