Uncontrollable Shivering, Metallic taste, please help

by shivering, Nov 07, 2008 07:41PM
Hi I am 33 and female. I have had this problem off and on for many years. Every doctor I've ever had has not been able to help me with this problem. They all come up with " don't worry, if it doesn't happen all the time"

Here's an example: A few hours ago I put on a sweat shirt grabbed my keys and went to get in my car. It is roughly in the 60's here in Indiana and not particularly cold. BUT, between the house and the car which is not even 15 feet away, I got so cold that by the time I got in the car I was shivering so hard I could not move other than to sit in the car and shiver. after the shivering subsided i had a bad metallic taste in my mouth. It took a few minutes for the shivering to stop. and when it mostly did, I was still freezing cold, shaking,  and my teenage son who was with me, was very worried and said : mom it's not that cold, are you ok?

I'm not taking any medications, I live a stable, fairly heathy life, for the most part. and I don't understand why this happens to me "sometimes"  It doesnt happen daily, but it has happened twice this week and the last time before that was a few months ago.

Anyone have any ideas what this is caused by? Please , twice in a week is 2 times too many.  It is scary and I don't know who else to ask, when I look it up online I can't find anything.
thanks in advance.

You are not alone. I am a 49 year old male and this problem started sometime in the last 4 years. However, I can say that I have always been sensitive to cold.
I have not noticed any metallic taste in my mouth but other than that, the same thing happens to me.  I also had a friend over for the weekend and he has the same problem. Before I read your note, he was the only other person I knew of that had this problem. He said that it seems to coincide with eating. He said that if he has a meal and then goes outside and the temperature is lower he will shake and shiver until he warms up.
I have dinner with friends in the mountains almost every Saturday night. I have to put on a hat and coat and run to the car when I am ready to go home.
I have sat in my car and was paralyzed with shivering waiting for the car to warm up. The shivering hurts. It is very very uncomfortable. It sort of feels like every cell in my body is cramping. I have a fear that my heart will cramp up and my friends will find me in dead in my car. I do not really expect that to happen, however the pain and shivering is extreme and it is a little scary.
