low white blood cell count

by cali990, Jan 27, 2009 10:39AM
yes hi. my one year old son is constantly having ear infections and has been sick alot. he goes to the ent today and they will be telling me if he needs tubes in his ears. but just a few days ago he went to get blood work done for a lead count and hemoglobin. well his doctor had called me and told me everything was normal but he also said that quest diagnostics had also sent him results of his white blood cells, which he didnt ask for. but his wbc is 3.7 and i asked him what was normal for my son since it depends on the weight age and gender for babies and he said it was 6-17 so is this dangerously low do i need to worry about all the possibilities. im thinking it is low because he has had so many infections in a row that his white blood cell count hasnt had a chance to boost up...he goes back in two weeks to get more blood work to see if its back to normal and since then hes had a slight cold and im hoping it doesnt get worse....he seems to get sick very easily....

hi just wondering about low white blood count as my 1 year old had just had the same and llow count on pallets? not sure what to think he is being reffered to peditrician at swindon hospital to discuss this but worried what could be wrong? what does it mean if these blood counts are low? \

Low WBC counts can be caused by a number of things to include recent viral infections. A repeat test when he is felling better is wise to ruleout other blood problems. Hopefully all will be back to normal. Low platelet counts are a different issue. Again it would be wise to repeat the platelet count to be sure it was not a lab error.
