question on hepatic function

by johnla, Feb 26, 2008 12:52PM
Hi,

I am 40 year asian male- 5'8" 165lbs and in good general health.  Lately, traveling alot and getting a little lethargic.  Had an annual physical with a hepatic functiona panel.  In the test, i received feedback that my bilirubin was out of range 2.5 (direct is 0.4 and indirect is 2.1).  This was the second test of which the prior test showed bilirubin range of 2.0.

What does the hepatic function panel do? What does the bilirubin level indicate?

Hi,  The test you had are all related to your liver. You need to see a hepatologist (liver specialist). A perfect bilirubin would be1.0, yours is high. Also I don't like the fact that it is going up...fast. All of your test indicate liver problems. I would see a doctor soon. This could be from use of other medications that effect the liver, such as a statin drug, certain antibiotics, even the use of acetaminophen, etc.. You need to find out what it is. In the mean time I would not drink alcohol, or use acetaminophen. The hepatic function and bilirubin level tell you how well your liver is working. Yours show problems. I can't stress enough that you need this checked out further, there are many things it could be.
