sickle cell disease

by amli, Jun 24, 2008 09:45AM
My son who is six was diagnosed for sickle cell disease (SS). I have a trait of the disease which is (AS) and my husband was diagnosed as having normal blood cells (AA). I did a second test on my son and it came up positive again(SS). How is that possible? I thought both parents had to have the trait in order for the child to have the disease. Can someone tell me whether the disease is passed on even though one parent has nothing at all? I never thought I would be in this position. I was sure for the most my child would only have a trait. Now I am completely confused and concerned whether I should have anymore kids. At the moment my son is on forlic acid and phenoxymethlpen v. 250mg twice a day. Is this not dangerous? Would he have to take this for the rest of his life? Still I dont know how this is possible. Can someone give me some answers?
