Dilated at 4cm and then 1cm

Dilated at 4cm and then 1cm

Last Thursday my Doctor said I was dilated at 4cm.  This morning I thought I was leaking amnitoic fluid so I went to ER and they said I am dilated at 1cm.  How does this happen?  The nurse said that the doctors measure to big, but from 4 to 1 what a big differnce.  I am not leaking fluid so my baby who will probably come closer to due date.

That's just like my doctor....

I went into L&D about 3 weeks ago and when I left, the nurse told me that I was 1cm...so last week I seen my doctor and he said I was closed...but you know, I'm still saying that I'm 1cm because all these contractions have to be doing something...

With my last delivery two years ago with the twins, I was 3cm one nurse said (even though I was walking around 4cm for a couple weeks beofre that), then another nurse would come in to check me, said I was 7cm, another nurse came in and said I was 5cm...so all the confusion left my doctor to actualyl come in and check me and I was 7-8cm...so they broke my water then....so I guess everyone thinks different "am" wise and that whole thing is just confusing to me...even when thisis my 3rd pregnancy.  LOL

Good luck to you and I hope something happens soon for us :)

Isn't the general rule about one centimeter per fingertip? I think how dilated you are depends on how much the person measuring you can move her/his finger back and forth.  So, it sounds to me like its an interperation really.

I think its like most tests, when the tech said my baby was measuring 3 weeks ahead in weight but when the midwife looked at the report, she said it was normal.  Now, the OB took at look at the ultrasound from December and said my baby was 6lbs then and is worried I might be having a 9lb baby at this point.  The midwife wasn't concerned but the OB is. Again, I think its a matter of each clinican's view point on things.

This happend to my friend:  checked by the RN at the hospital and told she was 6cm dilated and thus admitted.  When the OB checked her, the OB said she was only 3 cm!  But since she was in there and having regular contractions, they kept her and ended up giving her pitocin and breaking her water to move things along.

i have also heard that if the baby is pushing thier head down in your pelvis at the time they check how many cms, you can be more because the pressure opens you up and then if the little one lifts off, it can go back down.  nothing major, only a cm or 2 but it has happened to a couple people i know.

My EDD is this Saturday!!!  Im only 2cm dilated and 80% effaced.  I lost my mucus plug two weeks ago. ( I joined this forum, too, since Im pretty sure everyone on the Jan09 forum had their babies!)

The tech today said the u/s showed Sophia measuring as she should be for 39.4 weeks and she looks good!  I should hopefully get the ordering OB's impression by the end of this week. Fingers crossed that induction gets put on the table before I reach 42 weeks!!!!
