13.5 and 14 mm follicles on day ten...is that good?

13.5 and 14 mm follicles on day ten...is that good?

Hi.  After two years TTC & 3 cycles on Clomid I found an RE who I love and finally found out I have PCOS.  He recommended I try up to 3 cycles of IUI and this month will be the first, and I am nervous.  I did 2.5 mg Femara on cycle days 3-7 and went in for a day 10 ultrasound today.  The NP said my endometrium looks good.  I had lots of follicles but only one was 14 mm and another (maybe two more) was 13.5 mm.  Is this good?  Today is Friday, I was told to take my Ovidrel trigger shot on Tuesday night at 8:30 pm and then will do the IUI on Thursday at 10:30 am.  I have heard different opinions about whether or not multiple follicles will up your chances of getting pregnant.  I asked the NP and she said that even if there are multiple follicles that are mature enough to release an egg, typically one one follicle will actually release an egg when you ovulate/use trigger shot.

I want to be hopeful but am definitely cautious after two years of BFN month after month after month (miscarriage in Feb 2008).  Has anyone out there done the whole Femara/IUI thing and want to share your story?

Good luck with it all the follies are of good size and around the time of trigger they will be around the 18, 19 mm, generally any follies of around 17- 22mm will mature and releases with the trigger shot, not just the dominant one, I was told they generally grow 2mm per day give or take. as for the more follies the more you have the more chances 1 or 2 will take, so there is a higher chance of multiples, good luck and sending you heaps of sticky baby dust.

Yes, I agree.  They will continue to grow about 1-3 mm a day.  I know mine have grown 3 mm in one day.  The IUI is pretty painless, just kind of uncomfortable.  It's like a pap smear and they have to find your cervix to get the washed sperm up there.  Then you lay there for 15-20 minutes with your hips propped up and then you are free to go.  My doctor says to wait 16 days after trigger shot to test for pregnancy.  My first 2 IUI's didn't work, this month will be my third.  I too, think that I have PCOS and I also have endometriosis. I will be having my tubes checked with an HSG where they take x-rays this Tuesday. Have you been checked yet?   IT's very possible that it will work for you on your first try.  The more follicles that mature, the better, but yes, can increase your chances of multiples.  Good luck :)

I had a laparoscopy in Aug 2009...my tubes were all clear.  I also have no probs with uterus or anything of that nature.  I had a large cyst removed from my right ovary.  My OBGYN that did the surgery said it was an endometrioma but I had no other signs of endo anywhere else in my body and the path report said it was "just" a hemmhoragic corpus luteum cyst and my RE said likely not endo since it was a solitary cyst and i had  no lesions or anything else associate with endo. I was just diagnosed with PCOS last month.

I definitely WILL NOT take any pregnancy tests until at least 14 days after the IUI... I don't want to get my hopes up at all.  I know the chances of it working the first time around are slim but I love hearing the success stories.

Have your IUIs all been consecutive cycles?  If this one doesn't work my  husband and I are thinking we will wait a few months to try another, thinking maybe the metformin I was just put on might help to regulate my cycle and help us get pregnant ourselves.

Jilian,
Due to the fact that I have stage 2 endo, I was able to get an appointment with an RE right away.  They weren't sure that I was ovulating.  My follicles would grow, but then they wouldn't release.  I had a cyst a few months back that I had to wait to clear up before continuing.  The first cycle of Clomid was 50 mg, no IUI, no monitoring, etc... Then I went to an RE and did IUI in December 09 and January 10, so yes, back to back.  I don't really have much time to wait, as the longer I get periods, the more the chances are greater that the endo. will grow back and prevent me from getting pregnant.  So, I guess we are being aggressive, but hopefully my tubes are clear and we are able to do another IUI before switching to something else or figuring out a new game plan. I have a friend who has endo and is in her 30's and she got pregnant on her first IUI! So, I know it can happen.  Yeah, I tested 1 day early both times (on day 15) and ended up getting my period that day.  I had some spotting, which the doc said could be good/implantation right before AF was due, but it turned out to be the real thing.  So, I know about disappointment :) Have a great day... and good luck, I hope this IUI works for you!!

Im praying for you Jilian!!!

You are young and it should work plus you are a mom!!! So..... I'm very hopeful for you!!!

It is GREAT that you don't want to do HPT!!! I hate them!!! They are evil:)

I have my retrieval in early March!! (Fourth I and last IVF). My uterus is good and I have a 15 year old girl... but I'm getting old (41) so not much hope there :(. I will do something else if this one does not work. There are many options!!

Take care

Mariana

Keep us posted! I too am taking Femara. When I went for US Saturday, I had 3 follicles. 14mm & 13.5mm on my right ovary, and 21.5mm on the left. I did treatments with Clomid on & off for 5 years, and never got pregnant. So I can only pray that I will have better luck with Femara. I am soon to be 36 yrs old, with PCOS and have never become pregnant. With 3 follicles, I pray that it will happen this month! Good luck to you!!
