1st IVF, 1 embryo transfer only?

Hi everyone, Just wondering I am 30yrs old, getting ready to start IVF, next month after I get a polyp removed from uterus, anyways I have great insurance coverage but my IVF doctor only wants to start out transfering me one embryo if everything looks good in the fertilization process, because he thinks with only being 30 my chances of twins if he puts two would be huge, I am nervous with just one being transfered, I understand the risks of twins. Did anyone else get one especially that was successful? Thanks!

Hi,

I am day 6 post transfer.  I only had one embryo grade 8B to transfer.  I had five eggs retrived, so only having one is very frustrating.  The RE did say the quality was very good with the one I did transfer.  So I guess quality over quanity is better.  I also did a day 3 transfer.  Does anyone else out there have a similar situation to share?  ANy pregnancies out of it?

The number will be adjusted depending on embryo quality and day of transfer.  For example, most RE's transfer 3 on day 3 but only 2 on day 5.  My RE wanted to only transfer 2 (I was 35 at the time) but due to poor quality transfered 3 on day 3; I have one daughter from that cycle.

If your embryos look great one may be enough; if they look so-so your RE will adjust the number.
Good luck!

I completely understand how you feel. After speaking with my doctor, initially, she had recommended that we put 1 embryo in because of my age and because of my prognosis, which is basically normal.  However, with the way my first IVF cycle went she highly recommended we put 2 embryos in, we were terrified, but we put 2 in anyway.  We got a BFN and from there on out we were expecting to continue putting in 2 embryos.  So we started our 2nd cycle and it went so beautifully this time. We had 6 eggs that we were going to be able to freeze, when the last time we only had 1 poor quality egg to freeze.  So when we were in the transfer room we were surprised when the dr. strongly recommended only 1 embryo.  To be quite honest, my husband and I were relieved.  She said with all the research, the statistics, the way that this cycle went for me, the only reason why it wouldn't work is if my estrogen was too high, which if it is the uterus generally kicks out the embryo "because it's not happy".  I think your RE will do the same, he will see how you progress through the cycle and then give you a final recommendation at the day of transfer and you and your husband can make the final decision.  With our age, it is true that we would most likely end up with twins and with twins come more risks.  I wish you the best, just remember that it does take time with this and although it's terribly hard just keep focusing on what you are doing it for.  I have my pregnancy test on Tuesday and I have to think this constantly or I would've gone insane already.

Chrissy - even though RE transfers 2 embryos, it's not guarantted that it would become twins always. In many cases, only 1 embryo implants, so just in case, it is better to transfer 2 not 1 in my opinion. If your doctor agrees, its better to transfer 2.

Good luck dear.
