ALL - Do I go straight o IVF?

Dear All, I have a dilemma that i am looking for advise. After 6 months of clomid, I am now in the process of doing my first IUI with injections, (day 7) and I have no reason to think it won't work and am very positive but after over 2yrs of trying and one miscarriage the practical and planning side of me takes over. I am nearly 37 and I am thinking of going straight to IVF if this doesn't work - ie take 3 months off and prepare and bring out the big guns!
My doctor thinks I am not an IVF candiate and my husband thinks I am rushing into it a bit much maybe a few more IUI's and then think about IVF. We both have have the tests done no problem with me, my husband has a few bad months where his sperm wasn't great but all is well again and that was due to stress.

I also hear and maybe its not true that IUI in woman over 35 has not a high sucess rate. I have a 39 yr friend who after 5 IUI just had her first IVF cycle - she was not successful but is confident that after a few trys it would work. And importantly she feels like she is really giving it her all.

What does everyone thing?

Lots of Best wishes to you all

Tivey

Bring out the big guns or just spend most of 2009 trying IUI's.  By the way I live in SIngapore and here they don't seem to do back to back IUI's - I would need to do rest in between so would be end of year nearly before I got ready for IVF.

thanks so much for any advise - it has been on my mind for some months now...

thank you all for coming back it was good advise and I needed it.
The doctor says I am not a candidate because I don't have blocked tubes and there is no reason why I can't try conceive naturally. But if I don't get pregnant with IUI then I am going for IVF with or without him. He doesn't like putting people through IVF if he can help it but I am running out of time so we shall see.
thanks again and I will keep you all posted!
kmcarino : good luck with your 4th IUI - fingers crossed.

I don't understand why you wouldn't be a candidate for IVF if the dr thinks IUI would work. IVF success rates are higher than IUI. Did they give you a reason?

I would so at least three injectable IUI cycles before moving on to IVF.  Why doesn't your doctor think that IVF is an option for you?  I would suggest that your husband take a regular vitamin and some Vitamin C and E to help the sperm.  If 3 or 4 cycles do not work, then you could move on to IVF.  At least with IVF they can transfer move embryos and the success rate is higher but it is also much more expensive.  An IUI only has a 15-20% success rate so it could take a few tries for it to work just alike if you were trying naturally.  35Momofboys just got pregnant with twins through IUI with only 8 million sperm so it can happen!!  I am doing my fourth IUI this week.  I got pregnant through IUI a few years back and have a 2 year old son.
