Any tips for HSG?

Hi Ladies,

I just scheduled an HSG- anybody have any tips for making it a not-so-nasty experience?

Thanks!

Hi there,
In case anyone wondering if to go for HSG to Beacon Hospital. The answer is:YES. Cost 200 euros, which is OK for this service. I was really scared before the whole procedure, but they did a very good care of me, and nothing was scary at the end.the whole procedure took maybe 3 minutes...without no pain ( but my tubes were clear). Girls don't be afraid... it's really not bad...it felt like a normal gynecologist visit.
The doctor was great and the nurses fantastic.
Good luck girls.

Just wanted to share my HSG experience on this thread, since I started it a while ago. It was NOT BAD at all! I was shaking and so nervous, but all I felt was some minor cramping that went away pretty soon after leaving the hospital. However, I realize I was lucky in lots of ways: had a really nice nurse, took pain meds an hour before to minimize cramp feelings and- best of all- my tubes were unblocked!

I'm just catching up on this thread- ugh, I'm so sorry you had such a tough experience, Jen! Please keep us updated on the options your doc gives you next week. Hope you're relaxing and being babied by your DH.

Like I said - i am not really concerned. It was only 2 (three now) and now I am bleeding a little. Thought I was going to escape that part, butttttt noooooooooooooooooo...pooooooooon the HSG. I am a big bloated and my feet have almost shrunk to normal size (haha no more saugage toes!). DH said - you look bloated...thanks dear. (Oh and I am a bit gassy - just thought you would like to know!) HAHA!

When is your HSG? Start pumping the tylenol now :) I felt dizzy as heck this morning - DH said I probably took too much tylenol yesterday ( I took A LOT!). It went away by the time I got to work. Thank goodness!  I went staright to bed after the procedure and fell asleep by 8:30pm and didn't wake up until 5:45am this morning like normal. Felt fine in the shower and BAM the dizziness hit me. It was weird! Oh well, hopefully I will only spot a little and all will be good tomorrow. But it wasn't NEARLY as bad as I thought it would be. And remember my right side was completely blocked so that could have caused the pain too. Good luck girly!

Got two more questions (I am going to make a post about it too):

1. My feet are swollen today. I was on my feet all day at school but they are swollen. They don't hurt or anything and I have no pain anywhere but they are swollen. My poor little toes look like sausages :) haha Anyone have this after an HSG?

2. TMI ALERT: I thought I would be spotting, but I am not - no big deal. I am fine with that!  :) Butttttt, I had two pieces of "tissue" from inside come out. It looks like endometrium (but no blood on it). I know it looks like endometrium because of the m/c I had. It just looks a litlte grayish and was 2 small chunks (like period clots but no blood). I am not really worried - more curious. Could this just be some "cobwebs" that were in there.  Never had a period (on BCP for weird bleeding a few months ago - this is my last month). So, could this be just extra tissue that was in my uterus or what? Anyone have some "chunks" come out after the HSG?

Thanks ladies - as always you are awesome!

Oh one more thing..If you decide on surgery, make sure you check that your doctor is super qualified and has done the procedure with sucess in the past..The reason I say this is , my 1st surgery was with my previous RE and he was only able to unblock one tube...I then went to another RE and had another surgery with him and he was able to unblock both tubes (my tube from 1st surgery blocked up again)....My tubes are open and will stay that way forever now, unless I get an infection or something like that...
And my second RE is sooo good and experienced with Lap surgery that he even invented his own tools to use for the surgery and he travels around the country teaching...So all in all experience in this department matters...
Good Luck !

My cramps are totally gone. My right side (near my tube) is a little sore, maybe from him trying to shove more dye in there, i dunno. I just got a call from him. I am going in on Tuesday to meet with him and discuss our "options". ugh...

oh yeah..you look about 4 months pg for about a week!  Plus you walk like a 90 year old lady w/major hemroids! LOL  But I didn't even take hardly any pain meds for it, I think 600 ibprofen maybe?  BUT the gas was stuck in my right rib cage...that was a bit annoying, but no big deal cuz I knew what it was!  My left incision was  bigger than normal...I had a A LOT going on in there!   ( I had 3)
My only thing about surgery is the anesthesia!  I don't like coming out of it!  Thats why I am so GLAD that this HSG is quick & you don't need to be put under!

Lap is Lapriscopic surgery...they usually make 4 small inscisions, one near your belly button, one on each side (kinda like where your ovaries are) and use a camera and instruments to repair, so the inscisions are very small....you only have like one stitch per inscision...The worst part about it is the gas they use to inflate your belly so they can see better! Sometimes the gas can get stuck in your ribs or shoulder..Otherwise it wasnt to bad..took a few days to feel better and like 2wks for the bloating to go away! I had the surgery twice! And I had Lap surgery when I had my ectopic this past June! Its really not that bad..Well hope this helps and good luck! Let me know what happens!
Take Care,
Lily

Thanks girls. I am just so sad. I just thought all would be good. It makes sense though. The only time I got preggo in the last 3.5 years is when I had 2-3 flolies on the left side (one time)...I think I have pretty much decided that I wanna just try IUI and some good strong meds for a cycle or two and try to get some eggies on the good side. Then if no luck, I can schedule surgery around christmas break and have a lap done. We will see if the doc oks this when he calls next week. It has just been a bad 2 years. M/c, brain surgery (long story), and appendix. Just sick of any surgery or anything involving pain. Just sick of it.

So a lap can be one to clear it? I don't even know what a lap is...can anyone shed some light on it.

The good thing is my cramps are minimal now. Thank god. I took a butttttload of extra strength tylenol before and after the HSG (1500mg before and 1000mg after). So, I think I may be good for the night :)

I TOTALLY agree w/butterfly!  I got pg after my left tube & ovary was removed.  (my tube was BEYOND repair GROSS!)
You can get pg w/one good working side!  Plus w/a quick lap surgery, you can get almost always things cleaned out!

HI,
Sorry to hear your HSG results..I just wanted to say that both my tubes were blocked and I had Lap Surgery and both my tubes are now open! Try not to worry..women get pregnant with one tube to or you can try surgery to open up your tube! Good Luck!

Well, I am back. That thing sucked. I think I just got so damnnnn worked up I was in tears before it started. I hit road work (that I sta in for 20 mins) and 2 bad rain storms so I was 20 mins late and in tears before I even got there. I was so scared they were going to cancel it and try to reschedule. I just couldn't go through the anticipation again (the first HSG was canceled because they didn't tell me to stop the metformin I was on at the time), so I was so jittery I thought I was going to explode. But they took me right back. Then I started to freak out and started crying and it still hasn't stopped.

Everything didn't hurt until about 3 pushes of the dye. Then the uterus seized. It was NOWHERE NEAR as bad as I thought it was going to be but I was crying (which I was already doing anyway). It felt like really bad menstrual cramps. If anyone has taken progesterone and got AF after that, that is what it felt like...it was just crampy. Thankfully they let DH back with me. I just squeezed the poo out of his hands! That helped a bit. I think I was just more upset at what the stupid thing showed.

Left side is perfect. Dye went right through. Right side - not good. The dye barely got out of the uterus before it stopped. He didn't have me roll or anything. He pumped more in and it still didn't work. So, needless to say I am devastated. Not only do I have PCOS and messed up ovaries, I only have one working tube...So, doc explained the results (while I bawled my eyes out), and said he would call me next week and we will probably set up another consult to discuss our "options"...I am just so upset. I can't stop crying. I am hate myself and my screwed up body. DH has no biological kids. I may never give him any. :( All that hope I had is out the stupid freakin window...

OMGOSH, you are SOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOOO funny!  I had to read your "landscape" line like 3x's..I was like, what is she talking about! LOL  Thats right!  When I had my lap done last Nov. I totally forgot to, I was so NERVOUS about the procedure & after when I first went to the restroom, I was like WOW they really went to town w/me! LOL  I figure, maybe they had some fun doing it! LOL
This time /my HSG I will "landscape"prior! ;) shux!

I had a mc in Feb 09, & a DnC, so I was GOOD then, but kinda the same thing for me, just checking to make sure everything looks perfect (well for an old 40 yr old!:)

I have a feeling somethings off, maybe my opening to my one little tube is blocked at my ovary.  The pain I had w/O on my last 2 cycles that were on Gonal-F produced 3 then 2 follies, & I had O pain for at least 8+hours, & that first month was really bad, I could barely walk, & I didn't take anything for it, pain doesn't scare me too much, after having a huge deformed ovarian cyst that would leak blood every month for over a year, I would take labor pains over that!

Good luck!  I'm sure you will be just fine!

I am having mine done on CD 5 but I am on BCP (one more month!) for some weird bleeding I had 2 months ago so I guess with the pill it is ok to do it earlier - i dunno. I just want it over with! I will let you know as soon as I get home.

Most docs use water based so I didn't even ask (and because I am on the pills, this month is shot anyway).  :) He hasn't given me any antibiotics yet. Some docs give them afterwards. Who knows :)

My RE said it could show any abnormalities in your tubes and your womb. My tubes were fine and my uterus was fine cuz we got pregnant in Jan 08. Then I had a d and c so that is my only fear for anything being wrong. That would be the reason...ugh.  just want it over with. I am going to be so nervous tomorrow and somehow have to teach all day...I think I am going to hurl right now...

Have to go "landscape" since someone will be "all up in it". hahaha
