Anyone Taking Provera?

Anyone Taking Provera?

My OB dr gave me some Provera yesterday as I have very long and irregular cycles. I'm on CD34 today. I was "supposed" to get AF yesterday. I'm still waiting! I have a lot of cramping though! She told me to start taking them tomorrow as I should have gotten my period by now. I'm not preggers. She said take them for 10 days.

Anyways... I'm looking for other women who have been on Provera. How many cycles will I need to be on these meds? How will I know if I cycle on my own before taking another month? Lastly , do u still ovulate while on the pills? I ask as we're TTC.  Any advice would be great!!! Thanks!!

Provera is progesterone that helps trick your body into thinking it ovulated and therefore start a period if you're not pregnant. So in other words, if you ovulate on your own next month, you won't need provera. If you don't ovulate, you might need provera again to start your period. Sometimes, provera can help kick-start your cycles and help you ovulate again...or you may just need to try an ovulation-inducing drug like clomid to ovulate. Best of luck!

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it! I know I'm ovulaing On my own as I had a pelvic us on the 10th. It showed I already ovulated. The thing is, my periods are very long and irregular. Today I'm on CD34. I should have gotten my period yesterday but have not.  I'm not sure when I'll get it. My cycles can go as long as 40 days! I'm hoping this Med will regulate my cycles.

Oh, I see. Well in that case, you actually don't need provera. You generally won't get your period until about 14 days after ovulation and it's only been 11 in your case (if you ovulated on the 10th), so you'll probably be getting your period on your own in a few days anyway.

If your cycles are irregular, and you ovulate on your own, it's always the first part of your cycles (before ovulation) that regulates the cycle length, as the time after ovulation is always the same (give or take a day or so). So in your case, if your cycles vary a lot, and you know you ovulate, it is the length of time it takes for you to  develop the follicle and ovulate that makes your cycles longer.

So in my humble opinion, I still think an ovulation-inducing drug like clomid would be a lot more helpful, as provera normally only causes you to get a period THAT cycle, and won't affect the following cycle. But you could always try it for a couple of months and see what happens.

Hope that makes sense.

:-)

Thanks again for your reply. My dr said I has ovulated before the 10th. My LMP was May 18th. Ever since I came off bcp in December, my cycles have been long.  I'm just hoping everything goes ok on these pills!!

Did you ever figure out what worked?

I have taken three cycles of provera and the last two times, i have not have a period. I'll be seeing the infertility specialist in a week and a half but over the phone, his nurse said they might put me back on provera. I'm not sure why if it's stopped my periods.

Between provera cycle two and three, I ovulated but we don't know when since the specialist saw it through an ultrasound he performed.

I've been trying to conceive and it's disconcerting that they can't seem to figure out what the problem is and why they may suggest provera again. Would clomid help even though I did ovulate without a period?
