Just reading the many posts of women who have similar problems like I do has lighten my load. I am on a regimen of folic acid, provera to start my menses and on the second day of the period i should begin Femera. Its good to read of the success stories. Hoping I will be one such success story in a few weeks.

Yes Femara's main use is for breast cancer which then it is usually taken daily but they found that if take just days 3-7 or 5-9 of a woman's cycle it can help woman get pregnant. I have heard of possible birth defects with the drug as well but only if taken while pregnant. I will be starting Femara my next cycle.

Were you having periods at all?? That seems to be my issue, no periods. My FSH was elevated at 102, but months before it was at 70. I think my FSH levels are and have been on the high side. My Dr. prescribed me Femara and said to take it on day 3 of my period but I dont have any periods, since having my 3 year old. Any suggestions?? Can I take it even though I dont have a period?? Will it start one??

I tried clomid several times and it never worked for me.  I then tried Femara because of a friend who got pregnant from it on the first try.  Well I also got pregnant on the first try on Femara.  I wasted so many years trying to get pregnant, I wish I would have tried it earlier.  I can't complain, I am SOOOO happy, almost 15 weeks pregnant with no complications.  I almost paid a fertility doctor thousands of doctors, but decided to try this before, thank God I did.  I had no side effects what so ever.  As a matter of fact, Femara leaves your body a lot faster than Clomid does.  Clomid also affected my vision some.

I took Femara for three months and got pregnant on the third month. I had comlications with my periods and found that I was not ovulating. I went to a specialist for testing and he recommended this drug. At first I was nervous about taking it and did alot of research which i also suggest you do if you are going to take it. I have a friend at work here  ( we are both ICU RNs ) who took Clomid. She had terrible side effects, and I had only mild occassional cramping.  She had alot more trouble getting pregnant and I only had to do it for three months. The biggest pain is taking your temp every morning and making sure you have sex around the time of ovulation. I am now 6 weeks pregant and have no morning sickness or anything, just the occassional nausea. I think Femara is a good drug for those having difficulty with getting pregnant.

My doctor is going to switch me from Clomid to Femara.  I was curious as to how expensive it is?  Also what dosage have you been taking?  Thanks for any help.

i also had no side effects from femara.  if you did not release the egg from the follicle you may want to ask your RE about using an hcg trigger shot in addition to the clomid.  i took 5mg femara days 3-7 with the trigger on day 13 when the follicle was the right size.  Also femara does not have any greater chance of birth defects than clomid if you take it appropriately (not while pregnant).  In addition, just having infertility problems increases your chances of birth defects than the average person, but they do not know if it is due to the drugs we take while TTC or due to the infertility itself.  I wouldn't worry though - the risk is still very low.  And femara is a breast cancer drug but all that means it that it inhibits estrogen synthesis (and if you have breast cancer you don't just take it for 5 days like you do to stimulate ovulation, you take it every day).

i took femara this cycle and my dh and i got our bfp.  I have to say that the femara was way easier on me than the clomid.  I had every horrible side effect with the clomid, hot flashes, mood swings, and thinned uterine linning.  When on the Femara I had no ill side effects, it was so nice to go through a cycle and get a good night's sleep with out the hot flashes and my dh loved that i no longer had the crazy mood swings.  Good Luck to you!

Oh, and it is a breast cancer drug.  I guess one of the side effects was Oing - that's why they use it for fertility now, too

I start Femara tomorrow and my RE highly recommends it (he was the 1st Doc in MI to do IVF - very highly respected around here).  He says it works better than Clomid and it doesn't have the horrible side effects.

That being said - My sister didn't know she was pg and took a cycle of Clomid when she was 5 wks and my nephew is fine (actually, he is 1 IQ point away from genius!!).  Not that I would ever recommend taking it whiel pg, but that makes me feel better about it.  :)

I think the nurse needs more information even though she is the specialist. CLOMIT AND FEMARA you only take them to get pregnant not during pregnancy. They are medications to help you ovulate. And every medication has side effects even advil or aspirin, and the fertility treatments even more. But if don't take your chances you never know. There are many babies concieved without medications and still be born with defects. If you have problems with ovulation you have no choice but to take any of this two. Good luck

Okay,
I feel like a TOTAL hypocrit right now!!! I just told you I would never take Femera because EVERYONE at work scared me out of it, but I went online, then in our drug books here at the Hospital and found that Clomid would actually be worse for you than Femera!!! I had taken up to 150mg of Clomid because I was not ovulating, I have PCOS. Well, from my research I would be better off with the Femera, it is not such a monster as I was told!  As long as you are ABSOLUTELY NOT PG while on it, which....with MOST drugs out there, not just infertility drugs you don't want to take while PG. Femera is only a catagory risk D (which is not good), but Clomid is a catagory risk X (the WORST!!!) I was never informed of these side effects to the baby when I was on Clomid...just the side effects to ME MOMMY!  The more I research the better the Femera sounds. I do not want to do the EXPENSIVE hormone shots again, and everyone says the Femera works wonders. Yeah, it is for breast cancer women, postmenopausal...but the side effect was these women getting PG!  SO still be careful, but I changed my position on the drug....I am for it. Pluse I here it runs out of your system faster than CLomid and makes your uterus more thick and cushy for the baby, where as the Clomid thins the lining of the uterus!  GOOD LUCK!!!!  I like to babble when I've been up all night at the hospital as you can tell, SORRY!!!

Hey,
I am a nurse in Texas and I work with several nurses who have been around forever and they don't want me to take the Femera drug, due to the "POSSIBLE" side effects. Now I know many women on this web site have had VERY wonderful results so I don't doubt the drug at all, but I am a hypocondriac type of personality so this is where I come from. I see SOOOO many horrible things in my line of work and Femera has the risk of giving your baby birth defects. Yeah, they say your baby will not have birth defects as long as you are not taking it while you are PG....but to me ANY risk like that is toooooo MUCH!  I've heard some terrible stories from some of these nurses about the babies they've delivered with these birth defects from this drug, and some other fertility drugs so I just caution you to MAKE SURE your RE does an ultra sound to verify your PG status prior to you taking ANY Femera and I would ask him/her several questions first, like how long it takes your body to filter completely out of your system, to make sure you don't concieve while you have any of the drug on board. This is just what I would personally do, and I want the best for you and your future family. Best of luck and I know you will be blessed with a beautiful healthy child......like I said, I don't want to freak you out, and I know how hard it is to see everyone get PG but you....just be careful and make sure your doctor does it right!
