Bicornuate Uterus

Hi all-  I recently had an ultrasound as well as transvaginal ultrasound looking for cysts and it was mentioned that I have a bicornuate uterus.  This is not my first ultrasound but is the first time it has been mentioned... My question is- I had a doctor in my pcd office look at the results and she said that everything looks normal to her... Is this something that is difficult to diagnose? From what I understand it is basically a deformity of your uterus causing it to have two "horns" off of each side possible making it look heart shaped- I find it hard to believe that there could be so much descrepency in what is heart shaped and what isn't?  Is there a better way to diagnose this? I have had 2 miscarriages, but both were very early, so i am not sure this is a tell all into what happened.  Should I insist on further testing for this issue or just believe the doctor? I have an appt with my gyn next week to discuss...  Thanks for your help!

I had my appt yesterday and the Dr. told me that the ultrasound "suggested" that I do infact have a bicornuate uterus- she set me up for an MRI and then a follow-up. If it turns out that the MRI shows the same she will refer me to fertility doc for further treatment... sounds good to me.  We will see how it all goes!  Thanks again.

Good luck at your appt!!  I hope your dr can give you some good info.  I think getting answers from your dr is the best!  Sometimes I think getting info online can be not such a great idea because like you said some of the info seems scary and some might not even pertain to you.  So why freak yourself out if you don't have to.  Let us know how your appointment turns out!  :)

Hi, I had 3 m/c's in the past year and after the 3rd they noticed a possible abnormality in my uterus during the u/s.  They sent me over to the hospital to have an u/s with a better machine and they thought they saw something but couldn't diagnose which type of abnomaly it was (bicornuate, septate).  I was scheduled for an MRI a few weeks later to diagnose which one I had.  The MRI came back inconclusive.  It didn't show anything.  My doctor then said she recommended I have a hystroscopy/laproscopy (basically put a camera through my belly button and another up through the cervix to see that way.  Well, to make a long story short, they were able to see with that surgery that it was a septate uterus and she was able to fix it during that same surgery.  It has been a long road but I now feel I finally have some answers.  We haven't started trying again so I can't say that I've had a successful pregnancy since my diagnosis but the % of pregnancies that carry to term after resection of a septate uterus is MUCH higher than before surgery.  I wish you all the best, it seems like a lot of information at first but try to stay informed, make your dr tell you all they can about the process in diagnosing a uterine abnomaly.  I also did some research online and learned quite a bit but you sometimes have to be careful about which sites you visit (some don't always have accurate info).  Keep us posted on how you're doing!!  Best of luck.
