I just found out that my tubes are blocked. I have one child and I am wondering how this happened. My doctor said that it sometimes happens during childbirth. How does it happen? What are the other ways that cuse blockage? Where do I go from here?

I have blocked tubes and surgery scheduled in 48 hours to remove both blocked tubes. I'm having second thoughts on the surgery. Both my ob and fertility specialist recommend it. But could there be another way to fix this without losing my tubes? Once I remove the tubes my only option to conceive is IVF, kinda pricey if I want lots of children.... I'm only 25. Will I ever be able to conceive naturally? If I have another HSG, could the dye unblock them? Wishful thinking, huh? What if removing the tubes mess with my cycle and hormones, will that affect IVF?

trc21- Since you have gone through this process. What are your thoughts?

I know my sister had a blocked tube-they did not know why-she was put on an antibiotic and that cleared it right away.  I think most doctors will try this first to see if it works.  I know when we first started looking into fertility issues-I had my tubes checked and that is one thing the doc said we could try if blocked.

I know IVF is a scary option, but in many cases it's a good one.  Your doctor is saying that you have a 20 percent chance of another tubal pregnancy IF - just IF you conceived.  The reality is that an average healthy woman has a 20 percent chance of conceiving every month.  With only one tube, you halve this and have just a 10 percent chance of conceiving every month.
-   because you already had one, you have a higher chance of having another tubal pregnancy - therefore you have an 8 percent chance of conceiving each month, and a 2 percent chance of another tubal.
If you factor age into the equation - if you are over 35 this will decrease your chances further.   I think if you are young then you have time to give things a chance naturally, but if you are over 35 and truly want a child I would give some serious thought to IVF - or other fertility treatments -  Ask your Doctor about IUI with injectables - it will increase your chances, and is less invasive and less costly than IVF

I had a tubal pregnancy - both my tubes were removed due to scarring - so I was terrified as IVF became my only option - now I am 14 weeks pregnant it doesn't matter how I got here - just that I did!!
Good luck to you, which ever way you go.

Hi, I have heard of many successful stories after tubes being cleared. Even on this site many women have said that they got preg. right after having an HSG due to the dye pushing through and clearing the path of the tubes! So your chances look very high! Good luck you will be in my prayers!

I now have a similar question, What Are My Chances With One Tube that after surgery now shows to be Clear But STill Dilated in Upper Region?

Little History~ I have only one tube remaining after a tubal pregnancy where the right one was removed. The left one showed to  also be blocked due to adhesions.
After surgery to correct the tube~during my HSG 2 days ago a different Doc from the same office (who pushes IVF Only) said the tube is open however still dilated in upper region so IVF would be the solution bc even after a tubal preg. you now have a 20% chance of having another tubal.?????
WHY do they only push IVF? From his reasoning I would still have an 80% chance of getting preg the natural way! And yes maybe less percentage due to one tube and the fact that the one remaining is not in perfect condition, but my husband and I still want to take those odds and try!
We meet with my Doc next week and we`ll see what he says. But does anyone have great news for women I guess beating the odds? I refuse to give in to IVF until there is no other option. I am remaining hopeful!

Hello,  I had a laparoscopy after an ectopic pregnancy had scarred and blocked one tube - during the surgery they found the other tube was also completely blocked - they were unable to fix it so both tubes were removed - blockages can occur any time - I'd had an HSG test done 18 months prior to that which showed my tubes had been clear at that point.   I was devastated to lose both tubes, but trusted they made the right decision -  I have just had my first cycle of IVF - and today got a BFP!!!   so hopefully if all goes well.... a happy ending!      -  Probably best for you to have a laparoscopy so they can see what they can do -   Good luck to you

I have the same problem although I dont have any children yet.  I know that tubes can be blocked due to an unknown std or even scarring in the tubes.  On sept 19th I just had laprascopic surgery to remove one tube that was filled wit fluid and a fibroid.  So I know what it feels like to get the sudden news of having blocked tubes. You need to talk to your doctor because they can go in and unblock the tubes if its just infections or even scarring, it can be removed and open back up.  Did you have any miscarriages because that happen to me as well that blocked my tubes also? Keep your head up and research online..it helps and most of the time when you hear a similiar situation online from real women it helps.
