Can a scan of 5 weeks pregnancy show much?

I have had a scan yday and i am about 5weeks and 2 days. The scan didnt really show much at all, it was all too small but they did tell that my uterus has thickend up nicely in preparation to pregnancy. Has anyone seen much or even had an ultrasound at such an early stage. My next one is in 2 weeks where they expect to see bit more. Please reply.

hi lischy, just noticed it sounds like u r pregnant the same time as i am. i am now 5weeks and 4days due 5/6jan13 how about u? thanks for the link on how baby scan looks am due for mine on the 18may will see how it goes hoepfully i can hear the heartbeat as its meant to be 22days after conception.

HI Vic,
I just went for my first gynae appointment yesterday, 25th April. I am about 4 to 5 weeks now and he did an Ultra Sound. There was nothing to see except for the closed gestation sac, which confirms pregnancy. The sac is empty but that is where baby will grow. He checked for positioning as well. He has given me another date in 3 weeks time, which will be on the 16th of May. Since this is my first child, I am a bit anxious and hope that everything will go well. We could not hear a heartbeat either, but Doc confirmed that it was too early for that. He checked and cleared me of fibroids and mentioned that this was a good sign. @ 5 weeks it's usually only yolk and sac. Don't get discouraged or worried. We did but at week 7 (or 8, don't remember) there was the "woosh woosh" of the heartbeat. Best thing ever. :)

i done a home preg test and it said i was 3+ weeks but docs made me 6weeks 3 days i went for ultrasound today and there was only a sac show up they said my baby is waiting to misscarrage!but what if im only 4or5 weeks it may not show yet,and they didnt do any blood test.do i carry on as if im preg or can i get drunk coz im just so confussed my boobs hurt still why~! ive done 5 tests so whats happning

hi i really need some answers. by my dates i should be 5 weeks and 5 days. i had a scan on wednesday and all i saw as a sac with nothing inside is this normal. been on different web pages and all say different things what is going on. gotta wait 2 weeks now for another scan, i am going out of my mind. can anyone help

i did pregnancy test 2 days ago was positive i went to docs yesterday and got sent straight to hospital as he thought it maybe epotopic im so scared had bloods done and examined yesterday my hcg level 2181 is this normal they think im bout 4 to 5 weeks they eventually let me home last nite but had to go bk first thing this morning for scan all the scan showed was a sack n they said this was empty but it maybe normal as it maybe to early to tell :( they havnt ruled out eptopic either ive got to go back in the morning for more bloods and wont get the results for 2 days and i got scan in 10 days its just a waiting game but im sick of the waiting already i am in some pain around my overies n i suffer wiv pcos ,endrometriosis and partially blocked tubes ,ive also had sever nausea,pain in back n stomach ,cravings, very tender breasts,headaches,extremely tired.i bled just after sex 2 weeks ago which is very abnormal for me but yet went to docs n he only tested me for chlamydia which was negative but he should have known better wiv all these syptoms :S so not looking good for me at the mo i just hope its all ok feel free to comment wiv some advice xx

Im new here. I had sex 2days b4 ovulation, 5 days after i bloated.  If im prego i should b 5wks 5days.  My boobs are tender with blue veins - bras dont fit me anymore.  I also have blue veins on my tummy.  My period werent normal, they were light en lasted for 1/2 a day then brown discharge for a day only when i wipe.  Im very fatigue, cant get enough sleep, have more than 5 weird dreams per nyt.  I also have too much saliva, taste buds have changed and my abdomen is very big.  I did 2 tests they were +v I went to the gynae ystday to my surprise he didnt mention prego but said I have fibroid en a cyst.  This is the same doc who checked me 2mnths ago when I felt the same way and gave me pills then after I took them I got heavy periods and huge clotts which were the size of golf ball coming out uncontrollable and when I askd him he said it was an infection.  Has any1 experienced this, plz advise.

I am 5 weeks and 6 days pregnant. Had a scan on thursday and showed a sac and a yolk sac inside. i was joping to see the baby. even a little dot but couldnt. Is that normal? Next week Im scheduled for another scan and possibly will hear a heart beat, This waiting is really making me nervous

I don't know what happen but I wish you the best.  Since the number goes up, just wait to see the U/S because it is more accurate then HCG.

Well i have had dramas full on and im actually getting fed up with this. Well Like i have told you before, i had that scare few weeks and my numbers were 1099 that was on friday the 10th july. Well all was going ok, and i had to go to the hospital for a check up and a ultrasound and there was nothing on the screen. They did my blood test that day too and said that my numbers had dropped to 890, and that im about to have a miscarrage or already have, they told me that my period will start that week, before the last weekend. Well to this day i havent had a drop of blood nothing at all, and i havent had any pain at all. I went for another blood test this monday just gone, and they said numbers should be around 500 if not lower, they are going to go down slowely and then i will get my period, well that didnt happen, my numbers were 3000. So i dont know what is going on now..... why are they going up and not down like they are meant to,,,,,,,, im really worried. and on this friday i have a scan, unless i start getting heavy bleeding before then. Do you have any idea what is going on with me???  PLease let me know. thanks a lot

hi its bree again ive also had a light brown discharge and ive been wearing pads since i found out i was pregnant its not a blood discharge but if i dont wear a pad it stains my underpants apparently its normal as the cervical mucus changes so dont worry and keep me posted..

Hi Ella598 my name is bree i just found out im pregnant too and it was my 3rd cycle of ivf last nov i lost a baby girl sienna i had my labour induced at 18 weeks so this pregnancy means the world to me.i had an ultrasound yesterday and the computer dated me as 6 weeks and 4 days but that was the date of my last period and i didnt ovulate til day 19 or 20 of my cycle so the doc said that yesterday was exactly a month after ovulation and the scan didnt show much and their is no heart activity yet he confirmed im pregnant and i have to wait til the 3rd of august two weeks away just like yourself.im scared that somethings wrong already and im praying my next ultrasound shows more i  should be actually 6 weeks and a bit when i go for it so my fingers are crossed tightly,please i would like to keep in touch with you im not much of a forum person but when i saw your post it reminded me of my ultrasound just yesterday i have an email address its baylie_22***@**** please email me and we can keep in touch our story sounds so similair good luck.talk soon

hey girls, well i had bit of bleeding on friday so i went to the hospital and they said it was discharge and nothing to worry about, i  only had tiny bit of pain but that only lasted 5 min. They did my blood again to make sure my numbers from wed have gone up and not down, On wed it was 373 and on friday it was 1099. Doc said those numbers were good in 2 days and that she wasnt worried about this bleeding. it was more like brown discharge really and it only happened when i went to pee and when i wipe, but nothing would drip out. I had a pad all day and there was only few drops on that, so its not heavy or anything, i think in 2 days i might have lost about a teaspoon of it. Im going to the dos today just to check me out, amd make sure all is ok. has anyone had any dishcarge that was brownish? I was so freaked out. Thanks!! :-)

I think MOST all of us here totally understand how you are feeling!  I bet everything will be just fine.  The most important thing right now is that they saw a sac in the right place.  Next your numbers need to start to double.  What DPO were you when you got  your beta drawn?
& to put your mind at ease about symptoms since this is your first time prego, W/my 3 kiddos I had almost NO symptoms at all!!!  Just tired, & that didn't start til i was maybe close to 7 weeks.  I was hungrier, & I HAD TO EAT when I was hungry! LOL!!!  a little heart burn, pee & thats about it!  I actually felt a bit healthier pregnant!
& w/my 3rd miscarriage I had the most pregnancy symptoms I've ever had.  BAD BAD BAD heart burn, super tired, very up & down, SUPER hungry, a bit of nauseated feelings through out the day.  I miscarried @ 11 weeks.
So kinda strange!  Enjoy the no symptoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think they can see much if HCG is less than 1500.

Hey thanks so much for your reply. I wanted to have one so i can rule out anything being wrong, but they didnt really tell me that either. Just that there was not much to see as it is very early. there was a tiny little dot, and she said that might be the baby but there is no way of telling just yet. I dont know how im going to last 2 weeks now of waiting. I just want to know that everything is ok. Its my first pregnancy and have resorted to ivf for it, and it was my second attempt and i really worry that things might not go ok. I dont know what else to think. I hope all is ok, i havent really got many symptoms, altho i do pee a lot, and a small cramp here and there, but no morning sickness. maybe that will hit me next week. I had a blood test on wed this week and my numbers were 373. Is that good? They concider it pregnant. Thanks girls

i have had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and there was a heart beat... so youre next ultrasound should be fun. congrats!

Ita is right. At 5 weeks 2 days, you'll only be able to see the sac and possibly a yolk sac. The fetal pole and heartbeat usually shows up sometime the following week. Good luck!

I don't think you could see anything other than the sac & yolk sac @ 5w 2 days.  Most of the time when you get an US @ that stage its to rule out an etopic.  Why did they do an US so early on you?  
MOST of the time you can't see the HB til 6.5 weeks, SOMETIMES @ 6 weeks.  Some DR's aren't even looking for one til 7 weeks, by then you should see it easily.
