Can having Bacterial Vaginosis this often cause infertility?

I originally started seeing weird symptoms in mid-march but had never had bv symptoms before (though i did have bv when i was younger just didnt notice symptoms) and was living away from home out of state so I didn't have a doctor. I waited until late May to go get checked out where they diagnosed me with BV. I was prescribed Flagyl. I took the flagyl for 7 days and went back to make sure it went away, and they said the test came back negative. Then I started noticing symptoms again so I got it checked out again and the BV was back so around the time of my period in June I took another course of flagyl. After this I switched doctors for personal reasons and about two weeks after finishing the June course of flagyl I went to a new doctor who did another test and said I once again had BV. I just started a 3rd course of flagyl on Thursday. (I told her that I already took it two other times.) But this time she also prescribed Azithromycin and I took 4 pills in one dose (as she prescribed) before I started my flagyl. When they called to tell me I had more gardnerella they also said there was another organism I was dealing with but I couldn't understand the name of it. (something urea i think).

Anyways, I have a lot of questions on what could be causing it but mainly I want to know if having it this often could cause fertility or reproductive problems? The only thing I have ever wanted out of life is to become a Mother and I finally found the man of my dreams but I am so scared that this could cause problems.

I am also wondering if taking the medicine that often could cause fertility or reproductive problems?

I have also had some anxiety with hand washing and I'm wondering if washing my hands too much is making me not be able to fight off bacteria so maybe that's why I keep getting it?

I also took the plan B pill a few times:
1. September of 2010 (i did the 2- pill thing in the pink package)
2. Beginning of December 2010 (plan-b one step)
3. December 20, 2010 (plan-b one step) (Same cycle as previous pill)
Then I was on birth control for the entire month of January (azurette tablets)
4. And Today, February 1, 2011 (Plan-b one step)

I was wondering if taking it like this could cause the BV to come back? Or if it could cause infertility?

I am really scared. Thank you so much for your time and thank you in advance for your replies.

OK, that's a lot of Plan B.  Why don't you just get on the pill, or use condoms?  It's really not supposed to be used that much, and maybe it is enough to upset your system and make you more susceptible to gardnerella.

It sounds like you are having unprotected sex.  A man can carry the bacteria and pass it to his partner, or at least my doctor had my husband and I both take Flagyl at the same time once when I had BV, for that stated reason.  He didn't want us to pass it back and forth, making the antibiotics run I was on useless.

My thought is that you need to get your vaginal flora back in order after so many runs of antibiotics.  I'd take a probiotic for my stomach, and maybe even consider (after your next run of antibiotics is over and you are clear of BV) douching a few times with a live-culture plain yogurt.

But consider, it is possible your guy is giving this to you.  Condoms are your friend.

Thanks for your reply. Would probiotics for the stomach still help my vaginal balance? Also, I have not had sex in a few months.

Would getting on birth control help to get everything back to normal?

No, taking probiotics for the stomach would simply be because you've been on a lot of antibiotics.  I got a vicious stomach thing that took hold really well, last time I had a run of strong antibiotics, because there was nothing protective in my stomach to prevent it.

The vaginal flora would improve if you douche with a live-culture plain yogurt.  Or you can just let it get better over time, IF you don't get BV again and have to go back onto antibiotics.

Being on birth control would not prevent a boyfriend from giving you BV, if that is what is happening.  But it would prevent you using Plan B as (in essence) a regular form of birth control.  It's just not meant to be used that way; it's too hard on your body.

I'd talk to the doctor and see if he thinks your boyfriend and you should have the next round of antibiotics at the same time.
