Closed cervix during HSG??

I went to have my HSG done today and the Radiologist Doctor was not able to finish because he was not able to get the catheter past my cervix. He said that my GYN would probably have try and dilate my cervix and use a scope to look around in there and see whats going on? He asked if I have my cycle and if its heavy and I answered yes to both. He then said theres no wonder your not getting pregnant because if I cant even get this catheter in, nothing else is probably gettin in either. I called my GYN's office because Im "freakin out" but she is out for the day and is supposed to get back with me tomorrow. Anyone who's had this issue have any advise on what will be the next step??????????Please help Im scared that this is it for me?? =(

I had this happen twice then third time ob was able to get in. But I had two doctors try the first time and both told me that it wasn't why I wasn't getting pregnant. They said if you have periods then there is an opening and that a catheter is alot bigger than sperm therefore sperm should still be able to get up there and also that sperm are strong and should be able to get in there. The doctor said she did however want to figure out how to get in make sure they could see what's going on and also in case we have wanted to do insemenation or invitro.

I was given a pill I had to insert vaginally to soften cervix and that didn't work on its own so then I did pill and they used a tool to dilate my cervix. Before trying HSG again, they did a sonohystergram so they were still putting catheter in but also had ultrasound so it helped guide them in to see if anything was blocking way like tipped uterus or fibroid. Once they were able to do this they then did a HSG the next cycle and used a different type of catheter and it worked. But again the ob assured me that this was nothing to do with reason I haven't been able to get pregnant.

Hope this helps. The most frustrating part for me was everytime it didn't work then we had to wait til the right time in the next cycle and it just seemed like we were stuck in one spot forever. I'm currently waiting to see if I get my period in these next few days on second cycle of clomid.

Again, sorry so long but I wanted to explain as I remember how upsetting it was to go prepare yourself for the test and then it not work.

Feel free to ask questions, I'll answer what I can. I couldn't find anyone else that this had happened to when it happened to me.

Good luck!!!

First of all, I can't believe he said that to you. That's so wrong!  It's not too big of a deal if they have to dilate your cervix. I"ve had it done. It will be good for your doc to see if it's stenotic. I can tell you that I have a small cervix and a "difficult" one and my RE said it has nothing to do with my infertility. Your body relaxes and changes during intercourse so don't let that radiologist get to you. See what your gyn says....   and a little hope: about 40% of women will get pregnant on their own after a HSG within about 4 months.

Same here.  I had to do the SONO three times because the first two Drs that did it could not get the catheter in.  One of the times he tried so hard I was bleeding for 3 days!!  The last Dr that did it was successful right away (he has way more experience) and said I had a very antroverted uterus is all and just need to bend the catheter.  Not related to infertility at all! I just have to tell them when I get IUI now so that they can get the catheter in right away and once they know there is no problem!

Hello! I saw your comment about your HSG exam. I had mine today and my cervix is tight, too. So what happened to you? How many times did you have the exam? Did you eventually get pregnant?Thank you for all the info you can give me. We have been trying for a year and we want to see what it is going on.

I also just had an HSG done yesterday and was told the catether could not get in beyound the tip of my womb due to the size of my fibriods. i really don't know wht to do now cos my gyn wanted to know if there r issues with my tubes before i go in for the fibriod operation so that the tubes too could be worked on. but as it is, i don't even know if my tubes are fine or not. the result of the hsg stated a utrine synaechia.
