Dye Test Question

I go in the morning for a dye test so my doctor can get a better idea of what's going on with my body and why I can't conceive.  I was wondering if it hurts or is it just mildly uncomfortable?  I got a biopsy of my uterus done a couple of weeks ago but wasn't warned at how much it would hurt.  (I actually asked him why they don't offer an epidural when doing a biopsy.  He laughed.  Smile)  My doctor said that a lot of women complain that the dye test hurts a lot but he said it doesn't because he's good at doing them.  He said if I can get through the biopsy as well as I did than the dye test will be a piece of cake.  I just want to mentally prepare myself because I hate surprises.  Also, should I pack some pads in my purse for afterwards.  (I have to go straight to work after the procedure.)

Thanks everyone for the heads up.  The test went well.  I took the anitbiotic they gave me and some Advil about an hour before the procedure.  The worst thing about it was when he had to clamp my cervix (I guess that's what he did).  Other than that I didn't feel a thing.  He did say he was good at doing them.  That a lot of other women said it hurt a lot but that's because they didn't have the procedure done by him.  I thought he was just being cocky but he was right!  I didn't feel a thing once he was all set up.  I am still bleeding a bit which is really annoying but my body always has to give me a hard time.  :-/  I have to wait until next Thursday to get my results but hopefully everything will be good.  Thanks again everyone!

Hi there.

I had this test done last Tuesday.

Be sure to take some Ibuprophen before.  I took some before and immediately after as well, just to be on the safe side because I had to attend a funeral later in the day.

I had some bleeding during the proceedure but no bleeding or cramping afterwards.  I thought it was pretty darn uncomfortable, and I yelled out loud.  It was really really intense cramping with a really full feeling.  It was done much more quickly than I thought it would be.

I think that everyone is different however.  A friend of mine had a worse experience than I did, but her doc did not warn her to take drugs before.  She may have also had a blockage because she mentioned that the doctor needed to use a clamp on her which was fairly painful.  I dont think that my doc used a clamp.  I just remember a jab when the catheter was inserted and then pressure when the dye was injected.

On the bright side - my tubes were clear.  Lets hope that my pipes have been cleaned out, and that egg can travel through smoothly.

One other thing that happened that I have never heard anyone mention before.... I have experienced mild to moderate aching in my pelvis, a little higher than where my ovaries would be (Not like menstrual cramps).  It's been bugging me for a couple of days now.  I called the doc to make sure that i do not have an infection, and he said that some discomfort in the abdomen is normal, as some people are sensitive to the dye that they use.  He just told me to keep an eye on it as it could bug me for as long as two weeks.

Really the test is not that horrid, and it is over lickity-split!

Gigi

When I had this procedure done it hurted me so bad that I made them stop the whole process, They only got to see one of my tubes and said that it was'nt blocked so thats good at least. But I think that I may have taken my tylenol a little to late so that could be the reason. I'm going to try for another round of the HSG but hopefully it wont be as bad.

For me it was just uncomfortable but for ladies with blocked tubes I heard it was really painful.  HSG is really quick though.

I've never had the biopsy, but had the HSG in Feb.  It is uncomfortable, but not unbearable.  The worst is the 30 secs it takes to put the dye in.  A lot like heavy cramping.  Like the other ladies said, take something for the pain.  I took 600mg of Advil before leaving for the appt.  The dye will leak back out and you will have spotting, so for sure bring pads and extra pain med for afterwords.

As I was laying on the table, I just kept picturing a BFP in my head.  It made it much more tolerable :)  My dr said that you are supposed to be more fertile after the HSG as it cleans out all the "cobwebs".  Good Luck!!

HSG? it doesnt hurt but THETAM01 is right not as bad as a biobspy , i am sure you had a pap done its kinda like that , they need to find your cervix and place a thin cath in there .. you will feel cramps when they release the dye and you may spot a lil ...take a something for pain... hope everything turns out good for you...GOOD LUCK
