Feel confused about this course of action from fertility clinic

Hi
I am not sure if I have posted this in the right topic or even if anyone on here can advise on this.
I have been ttc my 2nd dc now for over a year I am now 38 years of age so I do know the odds are stacked against me and it has been a very difficult time.
I have been experiencing irregular periods sometimes going anything between 3 and 5 months without a period.
I have thyroid problems thrown into all of this and that has been blamed so many times for the erratic periods however I have worried about early menopause the whole time.
My worst fears about early menopause look as though they may be coming true I went through a really bad patch this year from April to August were I felt unwell with symptoms such as nausea, dizzy turns, problems sleeping, getting too hot at times, and I was convinced that I was going into menopause.
I am under a fertility clinic and my latest blood results done in the may showed that my fsh was 62 they thought that probably this meant that that I was either in menopause or that I had ovarian failure they said that ovarian failure can be treated but menopause cannot and that they both give off the same symptoms even though they are both different.
The fertility clinic want to determine which I have and this is the cause of action that they gave me which I am quite confused about.
They advised me to take 1 months of hrt apparently in the case of ovarian failure my pitutary gland is desperately trying to spur the ovaries into action and they are not responding so the pituary gland is sending out more and more fsh to try and get them working hence the high fsh,the hrt is designed to switch off the pitutary gland and give the ovaires a rest from the constant hammering, apparently once the ovaries have had this rest they sometimes start working again on their own.
They told me that once I have taken my months supply if I get a period then its a good sign and it probably means I just had temporary ovarian failure and everything should be okay and if I don,t get a cycle then its probably menopause which they can confirm with a laproscopy.
Well I have finished my months supply and about 4 days later I got my period after a 5 month absence but instead of feeling pleased and running about screaming oh yes I am still in with a chance of  having my much longed for 2nd dc I still feel pretty desperate and I am not convinced that this means I am not in menopause.
Surely woman bleed on hrt anyway each month and its just the hormones from the hrt, isn,t this just an artificial bleed and        doesn,t mean you have ovulated and had a normal cycle.
Sorry this is whats confusing me and even if this course of action has kickstarted my ovaries again and I am not in menopause I am still not pregnant and its been over a year so what would be the next step for me.
Can anybody shed any light on how this tells the fertility clinic as to whether I am in early menopause or ovarian failure has anybody ever been given a similar course of action like this.
I would love to think that I am in with a chance but something tells me not to get me hopes up on this.
They also asked me to have the day 21 progesterone test if I get a cycle and I have worked out that I should have that done about the 10th of October, I have had this test done before but it showed way to low a progesterone level to have suggested ovulation.
Also In the middle of this I have seen a endocrinologist my doctor referred me to her when I went through the really awful patch she thought it could be  my thyroid making me unwell, the endo sat there armed with my results from the fertility clinic and blatently told me that all of my symptoms are down to menopause and not my thyroid and that my chances of concieving were very slim, I felt very depressed after that appointment and I still get upset about it now.
I am due back at the fertility clinic on October the 22nd where I am hoping I can get to the bottom of this but I honestly don,t even know what I should be asking anymore I am so fed up of all of this and I can,t afford to go private.
What do you think my next step should be and what this fertility clinic should be doing with me now.

I would go and get another CD3 FSh test done, or do a Clomid challenge test. That way, you will know for sure if your FSH is really that high.  And to be honest, that is indicitive of a menopausal woman.  I know my RE won't treat anyone with an FSh reading of 20 or higher and he prefers it to be under 14 for an IVF cycle.
But definitely get that 2nd FSH reading.  You might be surprised at the difference in values.  Mine goes up and down every month.  Maybe try a second opinion with another RE.
