Femara

Hi all, I don't have a lot of time to get online but I was just checking in tonight to see if there were any new August BFP's! I wish one day I could log on and see all the way down the page....BFP BFP BFP!

This was supposed to be my 4th round of Clomid but I didn't even go to the doctor for my ovaries check.....I am sure ya'll know the pain and sorrow of blood test after blood test, pee stick after pee stick. Magnifying glasses...........flashlights, taking apart tests...lmao. I am pathetic.

So I quit doing it all this past CD1.

A girl at work says to me, I got preggers with my first cycle of Femara. Can anyone tell me the difference between it and Clomid?

I hope and pray that we all get our little bundles........just looking for some info to occupy my mind!

~hugs~

All I've heard is that they work the same but fermara has less side effects and doesn't thin your uterine lining like clomid.

Clomid binds to the estrogen receptor, blocking the real estrogen in your body.  This makes your body "think" estrogen is low(even though it is not) and causes a cascade of events that leads to ovulation.  Femara is a drug used to treat breast cancer.  A lot of these women started getting pregnant so they looked into it for fertility use.  Femara actually inhibits an enzyme that makes the real estrogen so it actually lowers your real estrogen level and this also causes ovulation.  Clomid may not work well for some people if they have a higher number of receptors or the drug doesn't bind it efficiently for example.  In these cases femara is a good altrernative.  Although clomid has been around a long time, it has a long half life and can thin the uterine lining.  Clomid has been shown to be very safe for pregnancy and has been used sine the 1960's.  Femara has a very short half life and does not thin the lining.  It is out of your system by the time implantation occurs.  I also got pregnant on my first cycle of femara(currently 18 weeks) and I know someone else who also did.  I never tried clomid since I did not want to waste time thinning my lining.  Femara has fewer side effects too (I had none).  Last, femara HAS been shown to cause birth defects if you take it IF you are ALREADY pregnant.  For this reason it is very important to have a day 1 or day 2 ultrasound to verify that you are NOT pregnant when you take this.  I thought this drug was wonderful and I will try it again next time too.
